She is coming from a lady in Devon. I have done a fair amount of reasearch on them. But my main concern is, everything I read says never let them off the lead as their instinct to hunt is too great. I read the same about my Daxies but they are sound off lead.
They are lush! There was a PBGV who lived near us who has now sadly passed away. She was gorgeous but could only be let off the lead in old age when she was too doddery to bog off. Obedience was not her forte -- if you asked her to do anything you would be met with a blank expression!
I don't own them (or know many), but the one that used to visit my local park was not let off lead. They had him on a long line. He was a bundle of fun, but bonkers and spent most the walk howling/braying/screaming (not sure what the correct word is!) I'm not sure they are in the same league as daxies obedience wise
Wire haired Daxies are notoriously **** at obedience, and are so stubborn. Also being hounds, once a scent is found Hector will be off and won't come back until he is ready. So I am somewhat prepared for the PBGV traits )
A cute breed with all the usual scenthound plusses and failings. Treat a PBGV as you would a small Beagle - the big advantage of the Petit is that you don't need to run as fast to catch up! Do buy from a knowledgeable breeder, as having access to their experience is worth a great deal. Start letting him or her off lead in securely fenced areas right from the start, use a long line if the area is not secure. Always have high value treats in your pocket, and let the puppy know that good behaviour will earn a reward.
I agree with the above. I also recommend visiting a breed club event and talking with owners and breeders about the breed. You can gain a lot of information to help you decide if the breed is right for you, etc.
