Following on from Moobli's fab old photos, i rooted out a few from old books and pamphlets. Hope they are of interest. Guard Duty.... Front cover of Alsation League and Club of Gt. Britain 1974 Magazine. Featuring, (left to right) Supreme Champions: Fenton of Kentwood, Hendrawens Nibelung of Charavigne Ramacon Swashbuckler. This is the editorial from that magazine giving us a snapshot of thoughts and issues in 1974.
those great old pics of those beautiful and intelligent dogs but I mean the working line nowadays when I look at those overbred show line GSD, who can't walk properly anymore and I've to see their slobbering rear legs, it just hurts in my eyes :-(
Absolutely!! I could not agree more.. How fantastically amazing are those beautiful dogs - no roach backs, no slobbering rear legs!!
Apache - thank you for sharing these! Do you have lots of GSD photos etc from that era? There is a particular dog that was ours I would love a photo of, he may well be in your collection as was a Show Champion. (we lost a load of stuff in a fire).
Chillingham Shootersway Tristan he was amazing and we used him with photo's of my brother and I to promote the breed when they were getting a bad press. It's not especially those photo's I want, in fact prefer show ones! But any at all of him would be terrific! BTW How is Duke doing?
Great old photo's there and it makes me wonder whatever happened to that roughcoat type of gsd which you don't seem to see anymore? The shortcoats seem to be just that, and the longcoats are like Zena and Kodi, but when I look back to the ones we had when I was growing up, we had a big, chunky boy who had that roughcoat, a kind of "inbetween" like a really long shortcoat hair? Maybe I'm talking nonsense lol! I can't believe the height of that ramp It was bad enough when we did one of those at agility, I'm so glad my trainer didn't squish it all up to be that height, especially when Zena decided to show off and do a spin half way up it Jeesus, 9ft!
I think the dog's name is Chllllngham's Shootersway Tristan, didn't know he was a champion. Did you used to live in Sussex ?
nah you are not talking nonsense Helena they are called in German "langstockhaar" GSD's so not long haired, but as well not short haired ones just cannot find any translation for them :? might be something like the really long hair were getting stopped (by the breeding) before getting too long or the short hair GSD's got bred of them? maybe both? the short and the long haired ones? so something between
P. Duke Look's looking Good. I know this is an old thread, but it was great to see those old pictures..Thanks Apache. I love the " Old / Proper look, of the GSD. Here is a comparison of my Beautiful Jeager, at 10 years old,( in 2011) and my Little Rhodi, at 10 months old. (this year) Both taken in the same place, but a year or so apart. They are so similar, in thier stance! Both Beautiful boy's, and a "Proper Shape!" First, my Beautiful Jeager (RIP) in 2010/2011. Aged 10 years old. And my Beatiful little Rhodi, taken this year, Aged 10 Months old. Ps: Duke's Looking Good, Apache.
Helena, now that's funny that you should mention short/rough/long coats. I had started to think that Kodi was actually a rough coat, rather than a long coat. I took this photo of him a couple of days ago, so what do you think? Rough or Long?
Hi Jeagibear. Lovely to see that old photo of Jeager, he looks a lot like Ch. Druidswood Consort from memory. Beautiful dog. And Rhodi is coming on wonderfully, as you say, the correct original GSD shape and a very similar look to them both. You obviously have an eye for talent. Oh by the way, Duke is the dog that got injured and lost after the motorway accident, he isn't my dog. My dog is Kodi (named after the Kodiak Bear of Alaska).
Oh MYYYYYYY He is loooking absolutely stunning now isn't he, just like Zena was at his age I would say he is definitely longcoat, and I think they call it the "luxury coat" don't they? I remember somebody telling me that, because it's very fine fur, a lot, lot softer than some longcoats, say like Georgie's was. Everything seems to fall off it too doesn't it! He is definitely not what I'm thinking of when I say the roughcoat, because the fur is a lot thicker and coarser, not the fine, soft fur like Kodi and Zena have. Did his fur part in the middle down his back when he was younger? Zena's used to because of the softness of it? I will take a pic of Zena later on when she's dry lol, it's so difficult atm to get a picture of her when she's not soaking wet, cos if we're not down on the beach, she's in that pool!!
