Cheers guys! I had given up hope and this is a massive bonus. I think it will be one of the black ones who is currently called Ears because she has one sticking up. She is always the last one to go back indoors because she doesn't mind being in the garden by herself. She is very bright but biddable. I'm waiting for some pics! And she is going to be called Tia.

Tia is a very good choice of name

Tia is a lovely name and I do like the all blacks Look forward to hearing all about her, and seeing lots of piccies. When does she come home?

Aren't they just! That was three weeks ago so they are much bigger now. I'm waiting for it to stop raining in Leeds so the breeder can take some pics for me.

She is ready now but I can't get any time off work until the end of the Paralympics. So I'm going to get her on 7th September. The breeder is getting her first jab done (which is the same protocol that my vet uses) so I can get her into puppy preschool ASAP. She won't be missing out by staying there for an extra week as the breeder is very busy with her socialisation regime.

I'm just off to read my new Ian Dunbar puppy book.....

How do you think your other two will react to the new addition?

Dusty the Springer is a wimp but will set boundaries with a tiny pup. If she came here a couple of months older Dusty would get bullied, but we have been lucky enough to have a Briard and a Collie x pup in our social circle recently so he's been practising. The odd thing is he's a bullying thug with submissive dogs!

Ollie the GSP has a fairly short fuse and will not tolerate bad manners from fully grown entire males.....or tiny puppies. He will warn with either a stare or an air snap, but if they ignore the warnings he will flip them upside down and fling them about the floor. He has superb bite inhibition and has never even broken the skin, but it always frightens the cr@p out of the offending dog.

The Collie x pup responded to a couple of stares and has reached adulthood without any lessons in manners from Ollie. The Briard ignored several stares and a couple of air snaps and got decked last week. She had really been pushing her luck with him and suddenly found herself upside down being dragged through the long grass with him growling at her. He won't stop until I grab his collar and lift him off the ground using his collar and one of his hind legs. Anyway she was unmarked and now treats him with A LOT of respect.

Do I think Tia will get decked at some stage? Yes, probably but she won't be left unsupervised with the boys until I'm absolutely sure she understands and accepts the rules. Dusty was decked a couple of times when we first got him because his bite inhibition was very poor and he hurt Ollie when they were playing. They are the best of friends, constantly playing and Dusty now has superb bite inhibition.

I have just tasked my son (20 yrs) and my husband to read the Gwen Bailey and Ian Dunbar puppy books so we are all singing from the same sheet. Oh I'm becoming such a bore!

i had a bsd for 14 yrs they have a better temperment than gsds he was more loving and loyal and so easy to train and have better hip scores than gsds all i can say look at some of the police footage on line they are turn more towards bsds as better working dogs my old man police dog handler 20 yrs all he would work with was bsds

The thread changed halfway through and Maxine is now getting a GSD puppy ;-)

Each to their own, my ex was a police dog handler and then Home Office Approved Police Dog Instructor for 30 years and he swore by his working line GSDs Some UK forces are using Malis, but the majority of working GP police dogs are still German Shepherds.

I gave a lot of thought to BSDs, but decided on GSDs because the gene pool is much bigger. In order to get a "well bred" BSD you have to accept a varying degree of line breeding, which is not something i am comfotable with. To get a less "well bred" BSD would mean perhaps going to a BYB who is not necessarily breeding for temperament. I went onto a Malinois forum where lots of people had problems with nervous poorly socialised Malis, who might be described as "poorly bred". It's a bit of a mine field. The police tend to breed BSD X GSD to get the best of both dogs.

The GSD litter I have settled on comes from generations of hip and elbow scored dogs and I have looked at the scores of the relatives too. I have met both parents and many other relatives who all had very solid temperaments. Many of this pup's relatives are working police dogs. It is a carefully researched pup...now it's up to me to bring out her potential.

well done at least you did you research hope you enjoy and im glad you went to a proper breeder for a first class pup thats why they put the work in to the breed so people like you enjoy good puppies.
