OMG they are too cute!!! I've always had GDSs have set my sights on a WL GSD for my next pup (a large part due to Moobli and Zak as ambassadors ) but a Mali would be a close second choice and these little beauties could really tempt me.

Usually it is simply a case of breeding dogs with similar temperaments together and staying within a few 'Sport dog' lines although GSD x Malinois crosses are not uncommon and Helmut Raiser, a well known Schutzhund trainer, actively promotes the GSD x Malinios as the ideal sport dog.

If such dogs remained in the hands of experienced and serious Sutzhund folk then although personally I don't like the biting element of the sport i would have no concerns but this is not the case and you only have to search generic puppy sales sites to see how many so called working line Malinois and crosses are now being bred and sold - what really bothers me is the new image that is being pushed for the BSD and the very narrow view that only dogs bred for Shutzhund type of activities are 'real' working BSD and are a true reflection of what the breed should be like - this is just nonsense - here's our working club's website http://www.wbsds.org.uk/Default.aspx as you will see - all the varieties of BSD do all kinds of different activities that are just as much 'work' as Shutzhund but thankfully they still retain their shepherding breed temperament .

If breeding for exaggeration is wrong for the show world then it's equally wrong for the working world too - and with perhaps greater consequences for the dog ( after all more dogs are PTS because of their behaviour than because of their looks ) -

Personally i find it apalling that this :

What do we want in breeding; a very high drive dog with relative thin nerves that we can shape with positive reinforcement and clicker or do we want a dog like Max v. Stephanitz wanted: medium thresholds, good nerves and pronounced aggression. The benefit was that dogs with thin nerves and high drive could be trained to high results, In old school training these dogs after getting pressured and got some stick hits they were gone and nobody wanted a dog like that for breeding, now a days you can pressure them and give them stick hits and they will still bite and stay in the fight.

is the aim when breeding ANY breed -and it makes my blood run cold when it's being done to my own !!

You only have to look at YouTube to see where this market for aggressive dogs has come from. I find it really sad when you see a whole litter of very young Malinois pups being encourage to chase and bite a human.

I'm going to observe a puppy class with a well known behaviourist on Saturday morning...not for any particular reason....

I have been very busy doing lots of research which has resulted in me cancelling my appointment to view the pups. The coefficient for that pairing is higher than I would like, which seems to be what you get with a "well bred pup". To buy a less well bred pup would mean possibly straying into higher drive examples of the breed. I have now decided that a thoroughly health tested show x working line GSD bitch with a very low or even zero coefficient and parents with impeccable temperament is the way to go. I have found a two week old litter which is ticking all the boxes so far. This is the Dam's third and final litter and all of her pups have hit the spot in terms of temperament.

I went and observed a puppy socialisation class at COA this morning and it was a well organised pleasure to watch...even if I did have to tramp through muddy fields after them in my trainers when they went for a walk around the farm together.

My friend has been taking her Briard pup and there was a 14 week GSD who was apparently scruffing everything that moved the first week. This week she was playing very nicely!.

Shame about the Mali pups, but yay for GSDs

Who was the "well known behaviourist" and COA?

The breeder is Merjuke. I am waiting for them to email me pics of the parents. Dad is a WL GSD, mum is a SL GSD. The pups are black and black and tan with a black mask. Hubby is now very positive about a GSD. I'm going to take him to meet the parents who I'm assured are very friendly and well socialised. He has even said he wants a black one to match our black GSP!

The important stuff for me was hip and elbow scores, gene coefficients and the extra ordinary lengths they go to to socialise their pups. Look at the advert for Lottie.

That won't open but mum is called Floss.

I saw the advert for Lottie. She sounds like a little smasher and the breeders certainly sound to have put the work into her.

Is your possible pup's dam called Foss (rather than Floss?)? Is she a longcoat?

Yes that was a typo she's called Foss. She's a short coat that was constantly penalised in the show ring for having too much coat. That said she still did quite well. She's very pretty though.

Have opted for black and tan but OH says he would like a black, so dunno!

I agree, it's always good to hear about a breed from someone who is actually involved with it ;-)
