No they should'nt but its a common problem that can lead to aggression. Any well bred dog can be shy and aloof but even on the kennel club website I remember they can be aloof around strangers and weary of them.

Ive been looking at a number of rescue sites and have found the most common problem for them being rehomed is that they have growled or snapped and the family are having babies and don't trust them around the kids anymore theirfore dog has to go.

I also found that when I was on the cockers online site a number owners found problems with puppy aggression in their young dogs I too had to deal with this issue but I bellieve its down more to heavey handedness then the dog itself. Now ive bored my parents out of using heavy handed methods Millie is a very sweet and loving dog.

In the right hands they make a wonderfull pet but I guess the same can be said of any breed.

Hmmmmmmm I'm afraid I completely disagree, at least with regards to working cockers.

The breed standard says nothing of aloof around strangers.

    Really? :017:

Their temperament in their breed standard states; "Gentle and affectionate, yet full of life and exuberance". No mention of aloofness at all.

So show cockers are aloof around strangers?

I've met a lot of show cockers with less than desirable temperaments but this is absolutely not the breed standard - they are meant to be outgoing, merry and biddable wee dogs

So have some of my friends, my groomer is quite impressed with Millies behaviur.

I know its not but it does seem to happen a lot which is sad.

I did read it sometime ago that some how it stuck out in my mind.

My granddad who looks a bit like a cocker spaniel had a lovely rescued ex breeding bitch she was very sweet and was very relaxed around everyone if she wanted attention she would just sit next to you and look up at you with those eyes.

Sounds like my Blue Lacys aside from #6. They have a lot of drive! Like most gun dogs but sure enough hog dogs too :) so the aggression is there. Medium sized though with females averaging 35lbs and males 45lbs.

My top 3 at the moment are (in no particular order)
    1. Chodsky Pes (not sure how i would get one though or if I would want to wait until there are breeders in this country as waiting till a dogs 11 months to import and trusting all the early socialisation to someone else im not sure about..)
    2. Work Line GSD - (would like to go further in working trials and I think this would be the most suited dog for it! Also I just generally think they are pretty great!)
    3. Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (read that the boys do better in trials than the girls as they are a bit bigger but I prefer girl dogs???)

So much depends on how you rear the dog and the bloodlines he / she comes from.

The right sort of Irish Terrier would fulfil all the categories with the right upbringing - but you'd be lucky to find one!

I've got really old and cyncial now and from now on, all my dogs will be native breeds and will be used to carry out the function for which they were bred - and from working lines. I know its a bit radical, especially as I'm a huge fan of GSDs and love them to bits :?

Hopefully I will bump into you and your dogs at training one of these days....I keep missing you and hearing all about you from Terry:lol:

The one dog that fits all that criteria is my Labradoodle Lottie. She is probably my ideal dog:grin:
My other Labradoodle ticks most of the boxes but after being attacked by a dog as a puppy she is nervous around other dogs.

For me a Shar-Pei fits all the criteria except for No 3. Pei, I'm afraid are built for comfort not speed!
