Thanks, memo to self, get a black one! I have a friend who breeds working labs , she competes in field trials and goes out shooting with them. Is any working lab more trainable or are there some which excel at obedience or are there differences in those used in the field? I have always wanted a lab but are they as drivey as a.GSD. My.girl is so fast and has all the drives and in the right places,do you get that in labs? Thanks alys

No breed of dog is BRED to excel at obedience including GSD or BC! ;)

Dogs are bred for ther ability to work and you use that to channel into whatever discipline you want.

If you want a fast, drivey lab then you would go to working lines which produce, generally, a smaller, lighter more agile animal than that designed for the show ring.

There are numerous Working Trial Champions in Labradors and whilst one affix was more fashionable for a while than others, (they are no longer breeding) there are plenty of others which produce superb dogs.

A working bred Labrador will be more drivey than a show bred GSD etc.

I was at an Obedience Training day with Kamal Fernandez in Essex the other week and there were some FANTASTICALLY drivey labs there.

Love Kamal,so motivating and such a nice guy. We had him come to our club and he was fantastic, made you feel you could do it. I am hoping to go to him again soon. I am going to do my homework and go and watch some competitions. I think its between a lab and a GWP ( I like the look of them but that is shallow) I would like a Mali but they don't seem so social and I want a pet too. I want an all round dog,I don't want much do I !?
Thanks for all replies, have helped whittle it down. Have not ruled out a collie, would also quite like to rescue, any chance of a rescue of the type I want or am I completely mad?
    Thanks Alys

A lot of top dogs in many disciplines (including police dogs) were found in shelters.

Battersea have a working dog section.
