    Is this how Malinois look?

Or is this dog not a good example of the breed? (His face doesn't seem to be as pointy)

I'm asking because the Mals on 'Don't blame the Dog' seem to be fairly similar too, ie with not-so-pointy faces.

Looks like a working bred Mally -they can be heavier than the show line ones -although that dog looks quite fine boned and has good head proportions and a good stop - it's skull is a little rounded ( should be flat ) and it's ears are a little large but overall it's quite a good example of the breed

here are some show bred Malinois - top picture is a dog the bottom one is a bitch

I always thought working mali's are smaller than show?

I don't know much about them as a breed but the working ones I know are small and look like the dog in the first picture.

The show ones do nothing for me personally...

Malinois, like ALL breeds, vary in the looks.

Referring back to the many threads on GSD demonstrate that point admirably, with colours, coats, size, shape.

Whilst there is less variety in the Malinois you can still get "plush" coats, varying colours, varying sizes and varying head shapes.

I was recently with somebody who had a Mali from Belgium and one from France, their head shapes were very different.

There are some very small Malinois and some very large ones.

Ike, (Working Trial Champion, police dog and winner of the Service Dog of the Year 5 times, a record) is quite big compared to some but not as big as some others I have seen in Working Trials or in Service Dog competitions.

Whatever the model, they are usually instantly recognisable as what they are and not confused with another breed. ;)

I have only met "in person" a handful of working Malis (and don't think I have ever met a show one).

They really did vary in look, colour and size.

I think this lad has the look of a GSD about him.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

Is it just me or do the show ones look very different to the working ones? Which almost look like GSDs? Especially the first one Moobli posted (is that a mal x gsd or Mal??).

I prefer the working ones - they look like smaller GSDs (ish) :/

Also, does anyone know of any breeder who breeds Mals that look like the first one I posted? Or like the one's Moobli posted?

SB - what were the differences in head-shape of the Belgium/French Mals you saw? (Did you take any pics?)

John Rumble breeds dogs some of which look like the one in the first photo, his affix is Jotunheim.

Breadth of skull, size of ears, length of foreface.

    I do not do photos.

That was Jotunheim Just the One owned by Dave Howell, he could not compete last year as he was judging Crufts.

this is the first BSD Malinois to have won a ticket in Obedience.

John won the Mondioring World Championships last year with a dog he bred and trained himself, a first for a Brit! He also bred the first Malinois Working Trial Champions.

He uses different lines depending on the intended destination of the dog ie military v civilian and what kind of sport eg obedience/WT/Mondioring

Jotunheim was one source Lancs Police used to buy their working GSD pups (going back 10-15 years ago now) as well as Vomhausnye. There were always some cracking dogs.
