Why would they want pet Malinois culled...

I have been reading again about Malinois , not that i intend to get one any time in the future or at all ..lol

But after playing with one the other day i read up on them and found someone asking about getting one mainly as a pet and a running companion for his daughters ..
    One reply was
''Maybe you get a lab instead, or a golden retriever. What you are asking for is to buy a cull. THis should not be encouraged at all ever for the good of the breed. It is embarrassing to see someone with a Mal like what you are asking for''.
and went on to say he calls pet mals culls...

I know everyone says if you want a mal be prepared but that is a bit harsh ...

Well I was under the impression that the working type don't generally make good pets unless they do lots of sports/activities. Presumably that is what the person meant.

I see why they don't want the breed to become a 'pet' dog but I can't condone culling because of the breed. If there aren't enough suitable homes - don't breed!

White boxers often get culled as do long haired Vizlas, the list is endless.

Those who cull will all have varying justifications as to why they do it.

As we have just had a thread about rescues and puppy farmers, whilst culling may not be necesarily attractive to many, at least those breeders are taking responsibility for their dogs and minimising them ending up in an unsuitable home.

That seems a little unfair. Yes there are show and working Malinois, and it seems the twain shall never agree.

The Working line enthusiasts consider the Show types to be too big, ugly, and useless for work. [Yes I have heard someone describe them as ugly].

The Show types consider the Working types to be unattractive, not correct to the breed standard - definitely not pets or companions.

There aren't many crossover breeders where their dogs can stand up well in both camps. [SB will know of any]

Personally speaking, I do like the show type and their proportions.... as I like Belgians as the whole breed, and admire the small well-shaped ears and head shape that the 4 varieties have in common.

Dogs with ears like satellite dishes do nothing for me at all, it's a big turn-off. But I would also like a stable character that can be well socialised, but also do well in dog sports such as OB and Agility.

As I have no means of taking part in any dog sports at present even if I had a suitable dog... that's academic... But I will always be looking at any Belgians with that in mind.

Maybe he means one who has been culled from the work lines as in no good for work or breeding - culling can be used as in just removed from breeding programme???

Not these days they don`t , you may still get the odd old breeder who may do it, but generally most whites go to pet homes, times have changed ,why cull something you can get a good price for, lets face it out of a normal litter of say 8 Boxers Pups, if parents are flashy you are likely to get at least 2 that are white... its a lot of money to lose by culling them.

Regards your second paragraph, I was told that some Great Dane breeders cull some of their litters, due to the size of the litter and not having enough homes....

Don`t know if it still goes on, but in a way I can see the argument,

Not enough homes---stop breeding! The solution shouldn't be to kill the excess.

The trouble is that some working Malinois breeders have a very narrow definition of 'work' and it mostly appears to involve hanging off a padded sleeve  - In fact BSD are one of the great 'muti- tasker's ' of the canine world - their original and true pastoral breed temperament fits them for a very wide range of activities - and the different varieties do work as SAR dogs, as livestock guards, and as therapy dogs -

..the person who thinks non working line BSD should be culled is quite frankly a complete idiot who really needs to grow a pair of his own instead of trying to change the temperament of a sheep dog into some kind of weapon !!

If i had 2 daughters who ran and trained every day a mal seems like a good choice for a companion..
