Can you tell a working type collie pup from a picture ? General Chat

I know we have a lot of collie folks on here, can you tell the difference in types of collie pups from a pic?
He 10 weeks old btw..

I can tell they are collies and totally cute
but workers have such a variaty that I really couldnt say
Might be easier as they get older.
If its to label them for rescue purposes I wouldnt bother personally, that would possibly put people off when I havent seen working like collies be any more or less difficult than any other lines
Actually the worst ones i have come across are 'sports' bred ones up here

I was curious as people talk about other breed types as being suitable or not for certain households ...
Someone asked me to look out for a pup for them and before i pass the details on i wanted to get as much info on collie types ...they are an active family but it will be a pet more than anything ..

I'm no expert, but I don't think so. Collies come in all sorts of styles, long hair/ short hair different colours, different sizes. As far as I know, workers can be any of these, as can show ones?

Its hard, I dont think there is a definite line between working and show in collies.

You obviously have the purely show bred

The true working line dog bred from generations that do actually do the job

Then there are the more sports bred dogs which can vary between show/working or pure working.

Then there are 'pet' bred dogs.

And of course mixtures of all of the above!

imo the first picture looks of a show type head wise, howver the second picture is more working bred .

the broadness of head makes it look like sl, but the strong chest could be like a male wl

Do you have any info on the pups? That would help much more than a photo.

I don't think you can tell 'working lines' by looks. You are more likely to be able to see whether he has a strong working instinct by the way he behaves - is he already trying to herd, does he show a lot of eye etc.

TBH, I wouldn't promise anything. There is no way of telling lines, and certainly NO way of telling personality.

Are they in a rescue ATM?

If they are an active family they should be ok even if the pup is working type.

They just need exercise and an outlet for their chase instinct.

My old boy was farm bred and dad worked the fields, but he was fine as a 'pet' dog. He chased his beloved ball and enjoyed his training that kept his brain active.

So long as the owners are aware that collies need plenty of exercise and need to be trained, it could be a match made in heaven for the little guy

Yep ....there are 4 pups i think,,

I've not seen any show-type collies (yet!!!) with the 'freckles' on the front legs that these have. No doubt someone will pop up and say they have though

The second one looks as though it might be sprollie rather than collie - might just be the photo though.

It's difficult to tell re working lines - I've seen chunky pups that I thought would end up looking more like show collies and they've grown up lean and leggy!
