So Louie started off when we first started training, chewing the ends of his dummies, so I began holding the dummies in the middle - thinking it was a scent issue and him holding where he could smell my fingers had been. And it got better as well as training him to hold it in the middle, lately though we have gone back to holding the ends and faffing about.. especially with his 1/2lb dummy. So I need some new dummies. Leanne told about weighted hare and goose dummies and found a couple on Sporting Saint. But wondered if anyone could review them for me if you've ever used them.. There's this one, weighted at both ends but soft in the middle and comes in 3 parts. http://www.sportingsaint.co.uk/product/1089/category/25 Or theres this one, same with the weighting at the ends and soft in the middle - but different design. http://www.sportingsaint.co.uk/product/671/category/25 Any ideas guys. (BTW - this is partly an excuse to buy another dummy I know that training is required also)
Was just going to say that I only ever bother with the normal dummies and have never had a problem with training and moving onto live game. My springer has retrieved everything from a snipe to a goose, with only training on the normal dummies. Just an excuse to spend money but if that's what you want..... lol Helen
I give my dogs the opportunity to learn how to hold items with the best chances of success by giving them bottles half filled with water, hammers etc to pick up (obviously after they are retrieve bonkers). No need for expensive dummies (IMHO) but as Helen said, if you want to waste your money on stuf which can be simulated for free, go ahead.
Well thanks - I only asked if you had reviews. But if you don't then thanks OK, although you needn't have bothered replying if you hadn't.
Louie's had a couple of goes with cold game, probably should move onto doing more with that though... OH reckons I have enough dummies with 1 1/2lb one and 1 1lb one - but I can't set up my own little scurry with just two.. but he doesn't understand, he pays for a new PS3 then pays to get his old one fixed afterwards..
Tsk tsk I will remember not to offer unsolicited help designed to save you money in future. I thought as you are often saying you do not have much to spare that you would appreciate an alternative view; my mistake, I will not repeat it.
I said thank you.. but all I wanted was a review - didn't mean I didn't take what you said on board..
Apologies for my tongue in cheek reply. I do agree to a certain extent, you can never have enough dummies lol. I have a whole bag full and you do need to have a few when doing multiple retrieves. I do also have gloves and hats in my dummy bag for training difficult retrievers. Whatever works. Helen
No worries, I was slightly vague in my first post. Then again, I could always buy a normal one and get my Mum to sew weights in the ends.. hmmm, ideas - now I've had a sleep and thinking clearly..
If you want to try something different, you can get dummies shaped like pheasant & partridge bodies. Don't have any personal experience of them, but I'm considering getting a couple! You can get them here!
