no i always thought dobes were the only one thats why they were created? if i am wrong would love to know the other breeds though!! think they are also the only breed named from the individual who founded the breed herr dobermann.
Wasn't Dandie Dinmont named after a fictional character in the book Guy Mannering written by Sir Walter Scott? Not quite the same, but interesting.
I am pretty sure, like 99% sure, the Doberman is the only breed ever to be bred for the sole reason of Personal protection. There are guard dogs in general, but the Dobey is the only one bred to be a one person protection dog.
Were Bullmastiff's bred as gamekeeper's dogs to protect the keeper from poachers??? Or am I making that up? :-D
AFAIK, yes. They weren't bred for any other purpose then utilised elsewhere. They were bred to protect their handler/owner. And yes, their name comes from the guy that originally started breeding dogs to create them; Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann
He was a tax collector and needed a dog to protect him on his rounds. Apparently this meant HE could collect and carry the money and be protected rather than a dog wearing the money.
