Does anyone know what labradoodles are like as gundogs? Dylan and I had our first training session today and he did remarkably well I have a feeling it's me who needs the work.
I guess it depends on the individual and what you hope to achieve. Most dogs, even non-gundog breeds, could technically do many aspects of gundog training. Training is one thing, making the grade as the real deal is another. I've heard of the odd Labradoodle doing 'real' gundog work, but they wouldn't typically be the first choice for most involved in the shooting field.
Both breeds are of course gundogs, and there are many dogs of all breeds and no breeds working successfully on shoots. Of course you will never be able to compete the dog in Field Trials or Gundog Working Tests.
Their original function was to be a gundog, just as a Peke was to be a "sleeve" dog, the fact that neither breed is used to fulfil this function in many cases, does not invalidate their primary function.................
Well surely not being worked for multiple generations in most cases technically does "invalidate" their primary function. If they were still considered to be a true gundog breed, surely they would be categorized by registering bodies as gundogs and utilized as such more than they are currently? how many kennels of Poodles are there being bred for working gundog purposes in this country?
