I met some Foxhounds for the first time at Discover Dogs, and my brother and I were both rather taken with them - beautiful dogs.

There are some who do live as pets, and there are a few Foxhound Welfare groups who find new homes for those in need.

Have a look at this site and the links page also:

Isn't there a member on here with two Foxhounds?

I don't think I've ever seen one kept as a pet personally.

I know a lady who had 2 Trail hounds (one died last year) and they are a bit of a nightmare off-lead as they don't have much of a recall and she lets them do as they please and my heart was in my mouth when they used to roam off-lead in the car park on the heath which was near a main road.

    They were lovely temperaments though.

The JRT she has is awful with recall too as I caught her walloping it when it came back eventually after having a chase after the bunnies on the heath :009:

First and only foxhound I have ever met was a pet and living in London of all places! Really nice dog and was actually from a hunt and was rehomed as a pet, he was old and seemed to enjoy his new life.

Have a relative who's had pups from the hunt, they've got quite a bit of land though. Lovely to look at, very charming and very smart but when they get to that point just before they go back to the hunt, it would suggest that from puppy a foxhound wouldn't make a good pet, not sure about an older dog though. Always been brought up under the notion they don't adapt to being away from the pack and wouldn't really adjust to pet homes but evidentally this school of thought is being proven wrong!

My boy had a hound attached to his bottom once,he followed her into where she had stashed her flesh in my friends yard and she quietly escorted him back out into the yard by clamping her chops firmly to his bottom :)

She had her litter of pups there (she had previously been puppy walked by my friend adn came back for her first litter)

i remember her well form puppy walking, they would beggar about for hours then come out riding with us for a few hours then quick power nap and beggar off on their own for hours. I can also confirm that she was very glad to hand them back :)

it was lovely to have one of them back with her litter (who all happily mullered my boy LOL!)

I had a foxhound cross GSD. Looked like a GSD with floppy ears, had the mentality of a foxhound. I loved that dog. She was brilliant. Prey drive through the roof but, controlable. (Just)
Thats how I ended up with my current muppet. Prey drive through the roof, owner could not cope. She is sorted now but, she was much easier to cope with as she has a brain (GWP) and my Lucy was thick as mince. I miss her like mad.
I'd have another in a shot but, a Welsh one as I like wirehaired dogs.

    I'm here:lol:

Yes I have Craven a cross between an English & welsh foxhound.
and Flint a Foxhound cross of some description.
    Both are the friendliest,cuddliest (especially Flint),dogs going.
They can be let off lead in certain places,Flints recall is pretty good,Cravens is pretty bad,but that's my fault.

They did go missing a couple of months ago on a walk and were found 27 hours later, but they are not the first dog to go missing and they won't be the last.

They do spend about 50% of their walks on a lead/longline.

I work full time and they are fine to be left in the house, both are house trained.

    They live with a cat.

They are very independant strong willed dogs and not for the feint hearted, but they are similar to Beagles or any other scenthound really.

Craven has never been attached to a hunt,Flint I don't think so either as he has not been tattooed,I didn't get Flint until recently and he is about 5 years old.

Craven has no prey drive at all,but will happilly follow a scent round & round in circles for hours.
Flint has a bit more of a prey drive and can follow a scent for miles,he has never chased anything apart from a deer whilst I have had him,and I managed to call him off that.

Was waiting for your reply  I think they are very nice dogs, love being with a pack of them too, and it's amazing watching them work.

Craven, what made you want a foxhound?

I didn't go out looking for one,I spotted Craven on a P@H noticeboard looking for a new home,he was 1 year old.

I had been brought up with Beagles and I followed the Lakeland fell packs in my youth & childhood,so had spent a fair bit of time around hounds.

I had always wanted my own pack of hounds. and I'm on my way to getting a pack.

I had been looking for another dog for 18 months and when Flint came up in the local rescue, how could I resist.

The hunt sometimes meets at the castle across the back field from us and one morning my boy was going nuts. Lets him out and as he runs up to the back gate I saw the hunt go cruising by up the field just across from the gate. He boy was beside himself and in full voice (he thinks hes a hound) and my boyf had never heard him do it before and asked what the hell he was upto. I pointed out that he knew what the hounds were talking about and he wanted to go with them :)

the poor boy nearly burst with excitement! (T not the boyf) :p
