from the persoanlity you describe, sounds like some sort of gundog, also soulds like you want something a bit different...have you thought about Duck Tolling Retriever?

also, if you want a rescue and a pup, what about a rescue pup (but then I would say that anyway...)

    Springer?

My lad Harry is bonkers, but in a good way  He was a bit 'red mist' at first with all the smells (he's a rescue and working type) but once you get through that he is very trainable and has a good attention span (something the Dally lacks).
He is very funny though and has lots of character, his tail never stops wagging.

I think because I've spent a considerable amount time with all of the dogs I've listed (except the CC and HWV/HV) I like what they're about..

They won't let me rescue regardless because of Louie's bits. Even male - but I'm looking for a female - not to breed.. All mine are mutts so they aren't for breeding but because our other male would probably hate us if we brought in another male pup.. he's only just this week started playing with Louie and he's been here since he was 8 weeks and he'll be 2 in May (I know thats a while off..)

Have you seen Paney on GWP rescue. He is coming over from Cyprus in January. Solid liver. Stunning.

Having seen how you panic when Louie goes into hunting mode, i'd say another hunting dog at this point would be alot to handle. I know you put alot of time and effort into training Louie but can you seriously cope with 2 dogs running round like loons trying to find every bit of game around?
I say that as a person who owns 3 dogs who all hunt - once they get on a scent and start rushing about trying to find the quarry and they all go in different directions - it can be stressful if you arent in a totally safe place. You know the distances I drive to ensure my dogs get exercised in a safe place!

Personally, I think you could do with a breed that is still fun but is perhaps more level headed. Are you looking at a heavy coated breed or something with a shorter coat? I was going to suggest a Sheltie as they are lovely characters, very intelligent, do well in dog sports but easier to manage than something like a spaniel.

If you want a lively trainable dog about the size of a Springer,

then a Nova Scotia Duck Toller would be a good choice.

If you are no hurry, then it gives you plenty of time to look for a breeder and put your name down.

And mine is very very cheeky.

    Ooh yes please :D

I have - he looks like Leanne's Flynn..

I don't panic that much any more and you should see me on our morning walks Leanne - not a care in the world :D I just have to watch he doesn't go too far to my right because of the railway and horse fields. I think you're right but it won't be until next year so who knows..

TBF though I wasn't really ready for Louie and what he brought to the table when we got him - but I would think I was well armed for another now.. now I know what mistakes to not make etc :)

I don't want anything heavy coated or really high maintenance - especially coats.. and Shelties don't really appeal to me..

I think I'm swaying towards Cocker - but maybe not working type..I do love Fudgeley's Buttons :)

I know a breeder, I have her email address (somewhere) but maybe for the future..

Thanks for the suggestions guys, as I say, it won't be till next year, I've got lots of stuff with Louie to do atm.. refreshing mostly.. but thought I'd see what you guys thought first..

Show type cockers have pretty high maintenance coats. Most are clipped and trimmed I believe.

If you want something a bit different have you looked at Chesapeake's and Curly Coat Retrievers? (Curly coats might be a bit large though)
Theres also Munsterlanders (small and large) and Irish Water Spaniels, but coat might be a bit too high maintenance?

I did remember about cockers coats after I posted - but couldn't be bothered to go back and edit it with the net being slow.

So many breeds to think about.. Think I'll focus on Louie for now.. and then come back to this later.. :)

I think a working cocker would suit you!

They can go all day but then again a good show type cocker can do the same Millie has bags of energy but is very stubborn which can make it difficult to train her though I think a more experienced dog owner probably would not have any problems in the training.

Millie has a very human character and can be vocal, Millie is small at the moment but you might mistake her bark for a staffie or something bigger if you didnt know her and happend to be passing by the house.

She is loyal, protective and quirky ^_^

All though friendly to us she is shy of other people but would never bite anyone else she nibbles us because we are like playmates to her o.0
