when u look at hector (the 1st gsd.) he had a straight back.
he looked good and strong and fit. only the working line has maintained that shape. the show line has ruined it from the neck, down.

    Welcome to the Forum

    As above interesting first post

In what way have the breeders destroyed the breed ? because they don't breed GSDs that looked like they did in the 1940s,1950s, etc etc ?? You can still get that type of GSD(although the breeders prefer the Alsatian name)complete with the extremely poor temperament, lack of health testing & lack of ability to do the work the breed was developed for.

FYI I have owned GSDs since 1958-all from pure German bloodlines

And of course .... Nobody is ever forced to have a GSD if they object to how they look:)

Which "showline"the German or the English ??

Do you expect a GSD to have a flat topline like a Labrador for example ?

The 3rd pic is IMO how a GSD should look today....strong back end...unlike the 1st picture which saddens me! It looks like its back end is going to collapse to the floor any second! Shocking!

I also like number 2, number 3, and number 5 in that order, but not keen on any of the others.

Er no Sable is a colour pattern not an actual colour :002: Timo was officially a grey dog & Res Sieger in Germany for 2 years-super showline correct type.

2nd dog was our Echo(also German import) & the 5th dog was Ch Shootersway Lido CDEx

The others are either English Alsatian or USA show types, The 1st dog is the perfect dog dog according to the GSD(Alsatian)Club of UK & was Ch Voudaun Tarquin of Dawnaway

Yes my dog is Grey, although everyone else calls him Sable.

My vet had a hard time putting Grey down on his Pet Passport until I showed him his KC registration! :)

but when you have had one gsd, you never want another dog. they can mess the body, but they cant mess that mind.
treat them well, and you have the greatest companion in the world!

You might believe that show GSD breeders have spolit the GSD, but the truth is back in the 1940s/1950s/1960s the dogs on the whole didn't have good temperaments here in the UK & some breeders have stuck with the same type, the dogs that are bred by showline breeders(as opposed to Alsatian breeders)are health tested & have good temperaments.

I've never owned a so called straight backed GSD(which really look nothing like a GSD IMHO)as people really mean level topline & the breed standard has never required a level topline in stance.
