Thank you for that as I do not wish to get drawn into nit picking and petty posting.

She just posted her opinion about the 'topic' we are discussing - didn't judge others or say how unqualified they are ;)

Ok so we'll leave the bit about white GSDs as it is. Maybe at some point we'll have a special section for unorthodox versions of breeds that people actually prefer, such as White GSDs, White Boxers, 'Leggier' staffs etc

62.5cms = 24.6 inches therefore max height for male is 25.59 inches not 26 too tall there is a problem with oversize dogs as it is and as been since the 1920s
max height for bitch is 23.6 not 24 inches

<Sigh> I was not nit picking just pointing out the OP & others mis conceptions about the breed, Joe Public often has little or no knowledge of a breed that they own(as seen on a recent TV News item in which a GSD was described as an"Alsatian Guard Dog"both by the reporter & the owner. The dog was simply a family pet GSD)

The vast majority of people have no knowledge about what a breed like the GSD should be like, they rely on media/fictional portrayal of the breed & frequently these portrayals are totally inaccurate

    Well hello again.
I am not an authority on GSD's and have never claimed to be but your picked out sentence was an example of arrogant patronising.
My son has had a domestic GSD not kept for working purposes that at times has been in my care.
I have had a GSDx so I am not totally ignorant.
My original post was an attempt to answer AZZ's question on a word definition of herding, shepherding and guarding whether it was correct or not.

I think the profile that AZZ has done on the GSD is a well presented description of a dog that has many strings to it's bow and whether you see it as a shepherd or not it must be the most all round working dog of all.

It's original use as a dog that works in pastures(pastoral) has progressed to including many roles in society.

As I see it's main present day working role as a security dog then rather than the remark of why not call it a GGD=German Guard Dog I would find GSD=German Security Dog appropriate.
So GSD suits the breed very well.

Well the vast majority of GSDs around the world are not guard or security dogs they are, like all other breeds, mainly pets, so perhaps they along with all other breeds be called Pet dogs !.

The breed bred for & still used as Guard dogs is the Dobermann-developed by Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann as a guard dog for himself as a Tax Collector & other Tax Collectors.

Just because the public falsely percieve the GSD only as a Guard/security dog doesn't mean that they should be reclassified. They are still used in large numbers in Germany for stock working

Totally agree with the majority of this post. However, are they still really used in large numbers in Germany for stock work? I would be interested to know (I am not doubting it by the way, I just don't know).

I have already said as "I" see the GSD in its"working role".
You may see it as you wish.
There are varying guards from watchdog tenting alarm dogs to full on attacking guards in the breeds you mentioned earlier but I believe the topic is GSD's.
Read AZZ'S profile that covers just about everthing.

There have always been a large number of GSDs stock working in Germany, mainly because of the way the stock is kept & the way the animals respond to non GSD dogs(usually totally ignore them)

The Shepherding trials always has a good entry & although few bother with the show side nowadays, the Herding titles are always greatly prized.

You have to go into rural Germany to see the dogs working(usually in pairs)it's really fascinating, the breeder that our first import came from even had a handful of sheep that he used his dogs on, the BC that we sent over to Germany(ISDS bred)tried to work them, but the sheep totally ignored him-didn't even bother to face the BC up !

Interestingly the human shepherds are allowed to assist their dogs by throwing clods of earth at the sheep

Ease up guys, no need to fall out over it.

Everyone's entitled to an opinion, but it's just unnecessary telling someone they are 'clueless', no matter how misguided or uninformed their opinion might be. :101: (Why? Because we get exactly what we got in this thread - bad feeling).

Anyway we all learn from this lets just forget about it now :)
