Weimeraners, stubborn, noisy, destructive, not an easy pet?

    Been looking around sites on the breed and so far I have found that they are;

very noisy if left alone all day, everyday (I am not sure how long that would be?) and/or destructive.

with training they make good dogs but will never be easy pets

    they have a stubborn streak

if given the chance he will take over the household

they are dominant and need to stay at the bottom of the heap

    extremely challenging

(one site recomends John Rodgerson books on one page then has another full of how dominant dogs go first etc etc :? strange)

So, do they have anything 'going for them'?

It seems a lot of sites have this sort of description of the breed. However I would think that any active breed left untrained, in fact, most dogs left untrained would be like this anyway?

I have seen very, very similar descriptions of Dobermanns too. Yes my dog is protective and active but not overprotective and knows when to settle etc. I put that down to being prepared to put the work in. He is a typical dobe; 'velcro dog'. But he can be left alone and is fine.

So if you have a Weim, what do you think of these descriptions?

I find them a bit on the 'harsh side' really, not that I have the breed, I just think that if you are willing to provide a dog with physical and mental stimulation, play/fun, attention, companionship etc that as long as your traits 'suit each other' all's good I suppose :?:

I think they are very much dogs who need a reason to do what you want them to do..

Yeah... but I've never had the breed but I can say that of the ones I have come across not one of them has been totally friendly.. but then that could just be my experience..

oh yeh, what I meant was were they human aggressive, happy to tolerate people by their owner but do not want to 'engage' with other people, maybe a bit aloof? maybe fine for you to be there but as they don't want you they might grumble at unwanted attention?

I'm not sure - I've only met them in passing and been growled at or the dogs have been growled at for approaching - Sadie - and she approaches politely.. but with everything I put it down to the owners and the socialisation..

    thanks :)

yep, when Loui was really little he growled if people looked at me a bit long etc BUT that was when he was small. he wasnt scared, he just liked it lol just a protective little boy but as he was so young I just trained him and he is really good, I can take him anywhere.

One mournfully dragged herself round Obedience class as though on her last legs every week. Then one day I met her in the Country Park and she was a different dog! Alert, lively, enthusiastic, happy.
She was very friendly btw. Just didn`t like boring classes. :002:

oops, meant to add, I have met a few friendly ones :)

most (that I have met, and I dont own one either) are a bit like dobes tbh in that they are slightly aloof and are more interested in my dog lol

only ever met one male that was ok with males, all the girls have loved Loui, I think they only like me because they got to play with him though lol

From working in the kennels.... all but one weim were both people and dog friendly. All needed to be kept occupied, with kongs/off lead walks/mental stimulation. One of the males was quite shy which I think was down to lack of socalisation (I believe a rescue?). The one weim who wasn't dog friendly was the only noisey one in kennels (but then his owners had no control over him and over pampered him!!)

Overall I quite like them, found them much less boisterous than dobes, and much less noisey but haven't really met enough.

You pretty much answered your own question. Any of the more active working/HPR breeds COULD end up being all of those things without proper channeling.

I don't like a lot of descriptions of many dog breeds found on the internet as many are way too general.

Like all the HPR breeds, Weims need to be trained & to have something to do.

Unfortunately there are a lot of bad breeders out there who give scant regard for health, temperament etc.

I tattoo for a Weims breeder, he works his dogs & most of the puppies he breeds go for work. His own dogs are exceptionally well behaved & very friendly, they are all trained for HPR & the older ones are worked twice a week in the season. They do have their moments(especially when anyone visits)they like to meet & greet & inspect new vehicles, but they do settle down quickly.

Like all the HPR breeds they need to be well socialized & trained from day one & they need to be stretched mentally. It doesn't mean working to the gun, but they can & do excel at Working Trials more than Obedience

There is a lot of nonsense written about the breed usually by those who have either never had one or have had ONE of the breed and are thus an "expert" ;)

Weimaraners are not particularly interested in other people or other dogs. As for temperament, my current one is a PAT dog and is an excellent stooge dog when I go out to assess dogs for rescue.

I have experience of two and have to say both were incredibly aloof to the point of making ms quite nervous as found them very difficult to read. Both were bitches and both owned by different people. I think they are just not a breed for me so not a dog I will particularly be drawn to to go and meet.
There was a film once with a talking one and it was a total princess - that's how I take them to be! Too good to speak to me :)
