Looks and traits in cross breeds

I was starting another thread, and then questioned what I was typing, so thought I would make this one first lol.

I was going to say "it was a collie cross, but from the look of it was mostly collie".. but that raised the question...

Can a cross breed dog look like/very nearly like one parent, and have all the traits of the other breed?

Absolutely! obviously certain dominant genetic traits (such as short hair, the colour black, etc.) will have a higher chance of occurring than recessive traits (such as long hair, dilute colour coats, etc.) in crossbred dogs.

Temperament is mainly a result of genetic influence but obviously it is also influenced by the environment. Temperament is less predictable in crossbred dogs as the dogs could take on a combination of traits or favour one parent breed more than the other.

My old boy Sam was a BCxLab... he looked much more like a BC, but had more of a Lab temperament. He was a fabulous dog

People always tell me they cant see the staffie in my cross. To me I really can see it and she's looking less like basset and more like a staffie as she matures. :?

My boy looks like a very tall collie, but has shephard ways and a deeper bark than a collie but not quite the same as my mates pure breed shephards.

I Also find it amazing that bingo and tillymint look so alike, his a collie cross German shephard and shes a collie cross retriever and having meet another one on holiday, not tillymint in the flesh i know most people would assume there same crossbreed as look so alike. Genetics have a lot to answer for in this case as both seem to have taken after collie in facial expressions and looks.

we've got the world smallest status dog!
mabel's a staff x mastiff, 17'' at the shoulder, but all mighty mastiff when it comes to traits, even vocalises like a mastiff.

in her mind though, she's all lapdog

Louie looks like a lab, except different face - I think, different ears and tail.

Leanne noticed that he works like a springer - I noticed that too, but he retrieves are lab..

Sadie looks BC-ish but has no traits of either BC or JRT..

Benjie - we don't know what he is..

But there are breeds who look like other breeds - if you search Coated Xoloitcuntli (sp) on google there are coated ones that look like BC's or hounds..

    Hi Murf,

I have a rather attractive standard Yorkshire Terrier. She looks abit scruffy, but she's playing happily in the park[IMG]
