Awesome - I found them when looking for info on the health tests earlier lol.

So basically if it is a kennel breeding for working dogs, it will be obvious?

I was in a similar position and I didnt find this site before I found my GSD.

I got my Keira from Kazeti and Karen was exceptionally helpful so where ever you choose to get your dog from or even if you want to ask some questions while you decide if GSDs are the dog for you speak to the breeder. I went to speak to Kazeti while I was looking, I knew I wanted a GSD as I grew up with them but I still had some questions as I found out as you are that there is a lot to know! I told Karen what I was looking for and she helped me every step of the way. I am by no means an expert but from what I have learnt all good breeders will help.

I know I'm mixing this thread with your other one about GSD best worst qualities so apologies for that

Keira is still a baby but so far she is perfect, I did and still do not have any set ideas of how she should be only the temperament I would like, she is so clever she blows me away every day when we train. I would love to do agility with her if she has the 'get up and go' for it and enjoys it but we won't know until shes fully grown  if not I'll find something else, but I have everything I expected from a GSD and more in my little pup xx

No worries about mixing threads! I have a few on the go at the moment!

Aww she sounds lovely! How did you work out which breeder you wanted a pup from?

I am assuming I should find a breeder "close" to me as then the pup doesn't have to travel far and I can go and visit before I go to pick them up! How did you find out about Kazeti? :D

although I travelled approx 750 miles one way for my last dog, in the UK ones I would consider are Heather and Katrina already mentioned, Linda at Korzwin, Tracy at Agios, Carol at Antilli, the only reason I wouldnt consider Doug und Karen at Kazeti is because I only have standard coats although I have referred people on to them who are looking for a coated pup.

    Oh wow!
Well if all goes well in a couple of years time and I can get a GSD then I will try Heather first as they are closer so I can go over before hand as well.

How much "roughly" is a GSD pup from one of these breeders?

Cost won't be an issue, I am just curious!

I would agree with Smokeybear, just because the show kennels have Schutzhund titled dogs, it doesn't mean the same as a working line kennel having Schutzhund titled dogs. I wouldn't worry about the dogs having too much drive.

Without knowing the names of the lines, a loose way of telling is that most show line dogs are the standard black and tan, most working line dogs are sable/black/bi colour.

If you want a low drive pet then you should be fine with a show line who breeds for pets, even if they have Sch titles in the pedigree.

I have had rescue, obedience bred, and WG showline GSD and now feel ready for a working line dog  I do not want a really extreme, high drive dog, but would like something with a wee bit more drive than my current youngster (a Kazeti). Having said that, he is a fab dog and really enjoys his training sessions and I would say has enough drive and energy to do all the things I want. However, his downside is his rather sensitive nature. I don't know if this is more prevalent in the show line dogs, but I have heard nothing but praise for the strong nerves of good and reputable working dog breeders.

If you want a pet dog, then you won't go far wrong by listening to the advice on breeders given out by Wildmoor

As an example and contrast to the differences between the show/pet breeder websites have a look at these sites for working dogs ...

And a well bred GSD pup (with fully health tested parents) will cost you somewhere between £600-£800 in my experience.

So far Conbhairean is at the top of my list, but will still have a look around at others like Korzwin :)

as you are a novice at GSDs once settled on a breeder then take their advice when choosing a pup, in every litter there will be differences, a lot of show lines have a high prey drive with low tollerence(threshhold) but only have medium defence drive but with high tollerence, quick to chase prey but unlikely to bite or show aggression if raised correctly.
Remember not all show line pups will be suitable for showing like not all work line pups are suitable for working. You can get sable showline.
