Bit confused re choosing a 2nd dog later

Although we will not be getting another dog for a few months I have been in contact with some Kerry breeders to say we would like another adult bitch later this year.

I have had a reply back from one breeder at Ipswich to say she has a bitch that will be available in 4 months time as it is going to be bred from soon. She is 3 years old and a silver colour and has been shown. I don't think we will have her though as Jamie is not happy as the owner says she can be "naughty" with strange dogs although she is good with male dogs. I have e-mailed her to say what does "naughty" mean? but I don't think Jamie will let me have her

She says that Kerries are not usually good with other strange dogs. When I spoke to the rescue co-ordinator she said that the female Kerries they get are usually dog-aggressive.

Should I be thinking of another breed as a companion for Parker? He is such a sweetie-pie and gets along with all other dogs. The only ones he doesn't like are extra-bouncy dogs like Boxers and Staffies that charge up to him. He barks at them to say "go away" and chases them away.

The breed we are looking for would have to be a terrier and non-shedding as I'm asthmatic.

I would love to hold out for a Kerry but they are like hen's teeth and we want another friendly one like Parker which sounds like it could be a problem. We aren't going to look till after my birthday on September 28th so please don't show me any pictures of suitable dogs needing a home now!

Jamie's criteria is that the bitch must be dog-friendly and able to be let off the lead on walks as Parker is.

My criteria is based more on looks I'm ashamed to admit as I really like the idea of a show-quality silver kerry Blue:blush: I must just remember how stressed walks could be sometimes with dog-reactive Cherry-as much as I loved her would I willingly go into getiing another the same?

I saw a Kerrie bitch on a rehoming site a few months ago and thought of you. Will see if I can find the link again.

What about a SWD or Largotto? Poodle or IWS?

Or are their coats not suitable?

None of them are terriers. Any particular reason it HAS to be a terrier Kerryowner?

Thanks but this is another one that's not good with other dogs and Jamie says no! Fortunately as otherwise my head would rule my heart and I really would like another dog-friendly one like Parker.

No their coats would be fine but I only like terriers I'm afraid! Sorry-no offence to other dogs! Parker gets on really well with my Sister's Bichon and they don't moult but it's not my sort of dog.

Yes-I have met a few of these and they seem nice dogs. I would have thought they would be harder to get hold of than Kerries though as I want an adult and not a pup?

Or a little Welshie? I'd recommend an Irish (My FAV!!!) but they're not known to be great with other dogs either... but they're fantastic dogs!

OOH how about a Schnauzer? Standard should be approx the right size for you!

Do wire haired fox terriers shed? Or Borders? I'll slide in another vote for decent size small poodle.

I have known 2 wheatens and they were both LOVELY :)
Not sure how common they are in rescue but I see a lot more of them than kerries so I gues statistically there should be more in rescue or is this not the case if they are more easy going dogs...?

Yorkie? (no bias or nuffin' ;))

Small, very manageable, energetic, don't shed, owner loyal, terrier attitude in a little package.

I don't know-I thought it would be best though I have had 2 male Cairn terriers with no problem and Parker is easy-going.

Too big! This was my original choice and Jamie said no-too big.

Yes-I do like this breed but there again even more rare than Kerries (the standard ones).

I like WFT but not known for being dog-friendly I think?

    I like Wheatons too

Sorry-not a terrier but a toy dog! Nothing personal as I think they are great characters and long-lived too.

These are the details I got of the Kerry bitch we could have in 4 months time after it has had a litter-what do you think?

Tasha was not bred by me but has a lot of my breeding which is why I have her with me. She has been with me since March and I have found her easy to get along with but I know she is desperate to be in a home environment rather than a kennel (albeit it a 5 star one) which is where she lives at present.
Before I got her she lived with 2 other kerries (her mother and father) and 4 airedales. She was OK with the pack of dogs she lived with but did bite one of the young airedales. The circumstances were that two airedales were play fighting, it got rough and one screamed. Tasha intervened and bit it. The people live in a small house and decided it would be better if she came to me. They are desperate for a puppy from her as their other two kerries are older which is why I am intending to mate her before I find her a forever home. They were desperately upset about parting with her and have travelled over 5 hours to visit her since she has been here.
She would probably be best walked on a retractable lead unless you know of fields etc where there are not other dogs. I would think she would bond well with your dog but I wouldnt say she would be 100% with other dogs but with work and effort you may resolve this or be able to manage it. I would not say she would immediately go to attack another dog as she isnt like that here at all but I couldnt trust her 100%.
I therefore do not think her temperament is dreadful but she would benefit from training and more 121 training.
She is very sensible on the lead and has been well socialised.
She runs off the lead in my 6 acre paddock and ignores my emus and horse and she normally runs with a male dog happily.

Jamie has said he wants a dog like Parker that is dog-friendly and can be trusted off-lead. He has said that he is happy for us to have this bitch for a trial weekend to see what she is like on walks (though obviously we could keep her leashed) and how she gets on with Parker. I haven't checked with the owner if she would be happy for that to happen but what do you think?

They are technically terriers (thus the name ;-)), they are just not in the KC 'Terrier' category, that is all.

Oh didn't know that! I did see someone entering their Yorkie in a terrier show I was at once and I thought it strange but it doesn't really matter at local shows-it wasn't Crufts! Of course Yorkies were bred for ratting originally I think which is definitely a terrier vocation!

I know you probably don't want to hear this but I have my reservations about this woman breeding from Tasha and then moving her on...if these people, who already own so many dogs, are that desperate for a puppy, then why don't they just buy one and let this poor girl find her forever home with you or whoever else would be lucky enough to own her?

The breeders reasons for her having a litter just don't wash with me, ok if these others do have a pup..what happens to the rest of the litter and who gets the money they make?

I know it's a raw time for you at the moment, and I'm not criticising you at all, far from it, I know you will offer a wonderful home to the right dog or bitch, it just upsets me when people whitewash their real intentions...I would imagine being moved from her home, having a litter, seperated from her babies and then moved on again would be the last thing poor Tasha needs.

I wish you all the very best in your search, there will be a special "someone" cross your path very soon, I'm certain of it...Cherry will send a needy soul to you just as Leon did to me. xx

Yes-thanks for being honest. I thought it was wrong to breed from a dog just because you wanted a pup. Sounds like the woman has enough on her plate anyway with 6 existing dogs! Because they are so rare I think I am thinking that I should take the first one offered when it might not be the best and the timing of this one would be good too. I must think of Jamie and Parker though as they both need a friendly outgoing dog.

I do know how difficult it is, you have that void in your heart that you need to fill and pour love into, and with the Kerries being so hard to come by as older dogs must make you feel that way.

Tasha sounds lovely and, if she were to be the only dog them it would sound an ideal situation for you all, but as you rightly say, you have to consider dear Parker as it would be awful if he were to have his spirit knocked, he sounds an absolute darling.

Maybe it would be a good idea to meet her and see how she is with Parker, then at least you will know whether to persevere or to look elsewhere.

I do feel sorry for her as I know you would give her a wonderful home.
