He is a stunning dog, I do admire GSD's if I were suitable as an owner I would consider one. Always really like them.

Lovely dogs, will certainly favourite the site. I'd love to own a GSD one day but sadly all the ones I come across have less than friendly temperaments. :(

Sorry Pam, must have missed your comment until now. Thanks for your comments. Great to know Heather and her dogs are so well thought of

Why don't you consider yourself as a suitable owner? They are fab dogs

It is a shame there are still so many bad temperaments around. There is just no excuse for it.

It is a shame, we met a lovely big blonde and tan (???) longcoat yesterday, but unfortunately the guy had no control over it and it seemed to want to treat Oscar like a prey animal. Thankfully though Oscar is a very fast prey animal!

unfortunately there is a lot of crap breeding around in particular from those that breed for colour and/or £££s, quite a few in your area

my current GSD is from Hausmailand he is a mix of German/Korean breeding but behind this 100% WG show line and his temperment is 100% he used to do therapy work, been a blood donor, stooge dog etc you can literaly take him anywhere such as acute psychiatric wards by any mode of transport bus, train, tram, car
I can have workmen come meet him then leave them in the house with him, he loves people. He is also good for teaching unruly young dogs manners.

Fortunately there ARE plenty of GSD with SUPERB temperaments, usually from those who breed from suitable stock and who are owned by sensible people

I just remembered now that one of our very first conversations on Dogsey (then Dogweb) years back was about Moobli (the book) I did ask Mike (Tomkies) about Moob's breeder and lines and believe (from memory) was from Molly Thompson in Sussex (affix Cantersfield?? I think). Unfortunately Molly Thompson died a few years back and I am not sure whether her lines are still on the go or not.

Thankfully I don't need to make up my mind for a good while yet, but I keep wavering between a Conbhairean or to go for a suitably well-bred working line shepherd.

    Well said

My shep, Yogi, was today surrounded by seven children (strangers) who were aged between about 5 years and 9 years all wanting to give him a fuss and telling him how gorgeous he is :-D He just sat with his mouth gaping open in a big grin and lapped it all up :)

    Thank you.

I realise that GSD's have a bit of an "image" (along with some other breeds), but whenever I hear of a GSD with a bad temprament, I wonder whether it comes down to nurture as opposed to nature.

I can think of 4 GSD's that I've met with temprament problems, and they all seem to have a nervous owner and are walked on lead.

Getting this back on topic, Conbhairean Lauser's daughter HERE.

I think many of the bad temperaments seen are down to a mix of nature and nurture. I agree that a nervous owner a nervous dog will make (to a degree). An excellent and experienced handler can certainly help boost the confidence of a nervous dog; just as an inexperienced or unconfident handler (as well as a lazy one!) can ruin a well bred and confident young dog.

In rescue, we often have dogs through with issues, and it seems to me that the majority are badly bred dogs who then lack any socialisation or training ... a double disaster in this reactive and sensitive breed :-(

Unfortunately the site with Dougie's daughter is taking too long to load :-( Could you upload the pic directly, or is that against copyright?

Oo glad I found this thread as that breeder isn't too far from me so may keep them in mind for when I am looking into it to get one if they are as fab as people are saying! :D
