Of course Sable isn't a colour it's a colour pattern-ie lighter background with a black overlay(in GSDs)
Still trying to get my head around the whole sable thing! So would my dog be classed as a red sable, as the colouring of the undercoat is a reddish colour? I thought he was a black sable ... but I guess that isn't right if the undercoat gives you the colour??
Quite an interesting site on different GSD colours. From this website, I think it is saying that a sable like Zak is a black sable. http://www.4gsd.net/colours.html
Sables are my favourite - no idea why. Before I went to see Koda I was kind of hoping he was a sable as his breeder had other dogs available who were sable. As it turns out he's black and tan (I think). I've been told he's a bicolour but I don't think he's a true bicolour as he's pale tan (almost blond) underneath. Someone else has said he's a blanket coat - almost as though a blanket has been through over the top of him which is apparently an extension of the black saddle. To me he's just Koda. I don't care what colour he is but having Zane & Yiannis who are both black and tan means it wouldhave been nice to have another WL sable as I already have Jenzi. Doesn't really make a lot fo difference though as I had him with a view to working him.
Here's mine! My 3 GSDs together before I had Koda. Jenzi (sable) is on the left of the picture. New boy, Koda.
Lovely photos of your gang Stumpywop Do you know what Jenzi would be classed as? ie is she a grey sable, black sable etc etc. No-one seems able to answer me about the different sable patterns or colours
Gosh I ADORE sable GSD's! Definitely high on my list! Zak has to be a fave, I just love his colouring - an absolutely stunner in my eyes!
No surprise there ... GSDs are THE best breed ;-) Hmmm it looks like a dark sable ... but I have no idea whether it would be classed as black sable. Still trying to find someone who can explain the different colours in sable to me ;-) Ooh yes please
they really have ive met some really nice ones recently, so loyal, and i feel so safe with them arent a breed ive particularly looked at before, but now i find myself going for a nosy at different pages
Just had an email from Zak's breeder about sable GSDs ... "Sable is a colour pattern, same as saddle back. Zak is a dark sable, the black sables are so dark they look black unless you lift the coat and see the lighter hairs underneath. I've only ever seen one true black sable, no facial markings or anything, just appeared totally black, but she had sable puppies to a black and red dog so she had to be a sable." So that at least answers my question about Zak's colour
Theres a litter not too far from me, the sire is son of this dog http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=663174 Im tempted to go 'look'
