I didn't used to be a fan of sable GSD's but they are my favourite now, so please indulge me with your sable pics!

Yes I know practically all of the H litter from Pepnick, my name initials are AT so if you look under club members and click on my name, you will see my dog(s).

It's nice that you know Kofi's dad. I guess it's a small world in Schutzhund! I spoke to a helper over here in Italy and it turns out that he had been to England at the FCI selection trial and had worked Kofi's dad there and remembered him! So it seems that it's even a small world internationally!

There are so many colours in GSD I get confused lol

Do the sables generally get lighter as they become adults?


Are the B&T (or is that meant to be rust?) the pale tan and black compared to the darker rust and black (often black in the face) that you see? (or could that be a sable?)

Sables usually get DARKER as they age, for example when my lad was a pup he was the colour of toffee all over with a black mask and a black V on his tail.........

As smokeybear said, sables darken with age, blk/tan lighten with age (some of the black is replaced by tan). There is black and tan and black and red (red is the deeper colour) but they aren't sables.

Most of the GSD's you see are black and tan as that is the predominant colour in showlines and most GSD's are from pet/show lines.

Most of the working line GSD's tend to be sable, bi colour or solid black.

It all gets a bit confusing with all the different colours. :?

Well I think there are colours (black/tan, solid black, sable) and then patterns (saddleback, blanket back, bi colour). But then you get all different variations from a deep red and black to cream and black.

And many different colours of sable, silver sable, red sable, black sable etc. I think Kofi is a fairly dark sable and is classed as a patterned sable. See, thats all clear as mud now.

Of course in Germany there is no such thing as SABLE, my dog is registered as grey.................

How many colours does one breed need?
So are there colour/pattern combinations that should not be mated together and or related to ill health etc? (other than whites)

It is the undercoat that gives you the colour so there are reds and greys

They are called greys in Italy too.

I don't think so, well not on a colour basis anyway (i'm not a breeder though). Although there is a lot of controversy over breeding working line to show line so it's not that often that a sable would be mated to a saddle backed GSD.

Sorry didnt want to saboutage the picture thread Scout I will stop soon honest! It just got me curious....

I'm no colour expert...but I think there is the red/black, sable, and then solid black that are the accepted colours. Then you have the faults..the whites/blues and livers.

I would say the work/show divide gets wider all the time, having a working line and a show line here, they are almost like 2 different breeds. It is very sad for the breed (I think) as they were originally bred to be a working dog, but very few showlines could work today. My showline was originally taken on trial at Belmarsh prison as a patrol dog while he was at the rescue, so he does have some drive (he was washed out from injury). But to try and work him in protection compared to my working line is as different as night and day, Shilah doesn't have the real drive that Kofi has..
