I think there should be another sub group of gundogs; OTHERS! :)

From what I understand the Working or Sporting Irish Water Spaniel competes as a multi-purpose gun dog - used as a rough shooter's dog, for picking up beating, flushing and retrieving. So I suppose it could almost be an HPR.

It works like an HPR, however it aint officially "on the list" :)

I don't think it's on the retriever list either  but I think they make good workers and they are a relatively unspoilt breed in spite of looking a bit odd.

I have had a penchant for one for some time, trouble is there aren't that many around, I like the look of them more than a poodle.

Spaniel- gotta be a springer (working)
Retriever - Working bred Goldie, a guy on our shoot breeds and works them and they're stunning and nothing like their show cousins.
    Setter - English
HPR - Brittany - something i've hankered after for a while and i will own one, one day

A very well known Irish Red and White Setter breeder (Mrs Webb - Shannonlee) in my area has them and she says they are also good watch dogs and they are a bit more suspicious (edit...probably should say more reserved) than many gundogs.

    Do they point then?

They look like a lovely breed but sadly everyone I've come across has had a bit of an iffy temperament.

No, but then neither do a lot of HPRs!;) they often bump the dogs. IWS do everything else though.

They were on a list of retrievers I looked at.

But just had another look - Obviously I am going back to the first page and I am so having a word and getting it changed! Still I chose two so it still counts! 8)

    Spaniel - working line cocker
    Retriever - NSDTR
Setter - Irish Red and White
    HPR - Small Munsterlander

Going to add Utility - Kooikerhondje

(utility sub-group I would include kooikers, swd, lagottos and barbet as none kind of fit into the other categories)

Spaniel - Working bred English Springer, have owned 3 crossbred Springers but never a pure bred.
Retriever - 1st choice working bred Labrador but as I already have one a working bred Golden Retriever.
Setter - Already have a Pointer so next choice would be a Gordon Setter.
HPR - Weimaraner, used to have one and would love another.

 Either way historically HPRs point, that's the "point"! If IWS don't point then they ain't HPR's imo. ;)

    Indeed!

Ah good, for a minute there I thought you were suggesting IWS could be in the HPR section, but as they don't point that would be completely pointless!
