    Hi

If you google for blue GSDs and images it brings up up a website of a GSD breeder who has had blue pups. She has written this concerning health issues

Owning a Blue German Shepherd is no different then owning any other color of shepherd. Health issues are still the same. They make wonderful additions to any family.

Hopefully that is the case and you will have many wonderful years together with your new companion.

Would love to see photos of your pup

No different to any other GSD, just a different colour.
Is your pup from a reputable breeder/good lines? That would certainly increase your chances of a healthy dog.
We're going to need some cute puppy photos  !

I too have a blue gsd (well blue /red) the only thing to look out for is CDA (colour dilution alopecia) my girls mum was solid blue and had it (didnt no when i got Arin) i have seen 2 pups born with it a big sign was bald ears, but have heard of others devolping it as they get older, my own girl has quite a thin coat.
Where did your boy come from??

My friend had a rescue one and apart from all the GSD health issues she was great!!

Hips, anal funclerosis (sp) and CDRM eventually.

it depends, is it from someone who produces for colour or is it just a blue that as cropped up in a long line of standard colours?

If it has been bred for the colour then you could have a load of problems apart from the CDA mentioned, these breeders are not known for doing health test untill recently so you will not have a 5 gen health pedigree you will be lucky to get 2 or 3 gens, they also unbreed on dogs knowingly producing health problem such as epilepsy, I know someone last year who bought a blue off when of these breeders and it had more than 500 lines back to epilepsy producers, the more lines you have the bigger chance your dog will be an affected one rather than a carrier.
They will also breed off known dogs producing EPI and IBD, this is where the falicy comes about GSDs having dodgy stomachs - they dont, I can feed mine raw one day and complete the next without resulting in soft or loose stools and have always done this without problem.

I agree with wildmoor, that the problems come when breeders select for colour.

I hope your pup lives a long and healthy life and looking forward to piccies!

Met two, both had terrible health problems, from the get go.

Mismarks turn up in all breeds, unless the breeder is deliberately breeding for a colour which is not recognised by the GSD fraternity.

If the health is ok (presumably and hopefully you bought a pup from health tested parent ie both sire and dam have been hip and elbow scored, eye tested and the male tested for Haem A, and they have good temperamants) there should be no restrictions apart from breed showing under KC rules.

My neighbours have a blue GSD - he's the biggest Shepherd I've seen, in terms of height! Unfortunately they've had a few issues with his temperament, and they often muzzle him when out as a precaution, but I know he's fab with their little girl and him and Kiki used to play together a lot.
