Does anyone have a Maltese x Shih Tzu? They are the greatest little dog. I have two that I do Agility with and my sister has one. Remmy has done really well in Agility, is up to Masters in Gamblers and Jumpers and just needs two more Q's in Snooker to get his Advanced Games title. He had his Starters Games Title and Starters Standard title in his first year of competing. I have just started with Kiska in 2010 and she has competed in a few Jumper Classes. She is only seven pounds but is a real quick little dog and should be able to do more competing this year. My sisters dog Mikey, has moved up to Advanced in a few classes but hasn't been to that many trials yet.
Sounds gorgeous But just to be clear, there is no such breed as a 'Malshi' You have a Maltese X, that is more accurate.
I should just be grateful the names have been mixed together that way round or can you imagine anyone telling people their dog is a "Shihtese"?
I am sure a both parent breeds could do everything your dogs do too - both are happy, extrovert breeds. Both breeds are small and long coated - I don't see the point of crossbreeding them
I'm sure of the same. I didn't cross breed any dogs and I didn't go looking for this "breed." I found a puppy who needed a home and I love him.. simple as that. I don't see why people get their tail feathers so ruffled over something that doesn't pertain to them.
I guess it's because words have objective meanings. A dog that has a Poodle and a Lab for parents is not a 'labradoodle'. It's a Lab X, or a Poodle X. Every single time one of these new crosses is given a 'cute' designer name, it legitimises them just that bit more in the minds of many. This then increases the demand for them and the people who benefit are usually the back yard breeders and puppy farms/mills. Meanwhile, there are millions of dogs in rescues, who are being rejected *partly* because people are too busy snapping up the latest canine trend in 'designer' dogs. Got to be something very, very wrong withthis, don't you agree...?
You're right too Krysta!Sorry if you feel like you've been jumped in from a great height.There's been a lot of debate on 'designer crosses' and you just kinda blundered unknowing into it.Love away!I'm sure your little man is gorgeous. The reason for the cross is in theory to produce a non allergenic coat as Malts fall into the same category as poodles in that regard. Point about rescue dogs,they're not ignored because of designer breeds,they're by definition the unwanted.They aren't all the kind or breed people want and a lot of people prefer a dog from a known background.I'm the first to urge people to a shelter but I won't automatically condemn anyone for choosing a different route. Come on guys,new member,howsabout a bit of benefit of the doubt?
I'm not saying there's anything wrong in someone choosing a 'designer' puppy - just that I think we should call them what they are. Crosses. Nothing wrong in that. And sadly I do think that *some* rescue dogs are suffering because the people who might have helped them, are instead being enticed by tales of labradoodles who don't shed etc. My cousin is a case in point - and alas she's now learning the hard way that labradoodles can have pretty high maintenance coats, something she never bargained for. But I do apologise if I made anyone here feel remotely unwelcome - that was not my intention at all, so my apologies

Thank you. And to the other person, you didn't make me feel unwelcome, because I totally get where you're coming from. My opinion was only that those with "designer breeds," may just need that dog for their situation. Unwanted dogs are one of the saddest things ever. I know that. If I could have a farm and adopt every single sad, unwanted dog, in the world.. trust me - it'd be done yesterday... I just think if I want to call my dog a Malshi (which I don't, really), that's up to me.

Because I call my dogs "Malshi" does not mean I am trying to make them a "breed", it is just easier to say than I have a Shih Tzu x Maltese. If someone asks me what they are, I tell them Shih Tzu x Maltese and enter them that way in the Agility trials.
LOL No, I meant 'objective' - words have objectively accurate meanings. i.e. if one buys a Labrador that is from a long lines of Labradors, then the objectively correct definition is 'Labrador'. If one has a dog that is a X between a Pug and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, then the objectively accurate definition is NOT a 'pugalier'
