Just looked for it online, couldn't find it. Stunning, stunning fur baby xxxxx Have a copy here but can only take pics and pop them on as I cant use the scanner:-(
When we were in lapland we went dog sledding they were a mixed bunch. The guy who does the racing in competitions who owned the dogs said they use the sibe type dogs for speed and the mals for endurance. They also had a half wolf we were told not to get in his circle as he only liked his owners
sibes are speed and endurance..lighter loads over longer distances mals for freight and endurance work. ..thats about right.. real wolfie types only really like their 'circle' when mature ;-)
Yep .we were told basically if he comes up to you let him sniff you but don't try and approach him as they wouldn't be held responsible for his actions !!He was a stunner though.
We took the kids to Finland and went on a Husky, sledge ride. It was lovely but I have to say how suprised I was at how small the dogs were. I expected the big Wolfe type dogs. Anyway it was a lovely experience!
I think the reason the alaskan huskie is used now as opposed to the sib or mal is because the dogs recieve more care. Historically they were basically expected to look after themselves, so weren't provided with kennells ect. This ment not only did they need to be able to pull but survive the harsh conditions. Modern huskies are provided with more care so a better pulling dog is bred, they can sacriface thick coats ect by providing the dogs with kennels. I think Mickb has some more info on it. Adam
