Andsal breed GSPs as well (more so than GWPs) black and black and white are GSP colours, but often black and b/w are less popular colours with GSP folk which would explain the statement.

I shall find a pic of my GSP boy as a pup. Coats vary even with in short coats. Yours looks like it will have a good GSP coat IMO.

I have a GWP. She is bonkers. I love her to bits. Goes for miles and miles. We spend hours on the moors.

According to the KC breed standard, in the GSP solid black and solid liver are both acceptable colours, as well as black & white and liver & white. In the GWP solid black is not acceptable. Solid white definitely wouldn't be acceptable for either, but I don't think 'predominantly white' is a problem, even though it is more typical English Pointer colouration. Anyway, Otto has turned out like a classic German Pointer - liver and white roan with liver patches. I think his colouring is gorgeous, but the solid colours are beautiful as well.

Slightly ashamed to say that I do not know the lineage of the parents - I suppose that's one of the things I should have asked, but I didn't think to. We met both the sire and the dam and were satisfied to see that they both had lovely temperaments, and the pups were being well socialised, raised in the family home by people who obviously loved their dogs and were not breeding them for profit.

I had a look at the Andsal website, though, and I have to say that it is very likely that they bred the dam. The pictures of the puppies look very similar in colouration to her, she has the same name as the dog named on that page (named after him, possibly?), it's located not too far from where our pup was born, and the owner did mention that she had come from a large kennel and not a family home. If that's her father / Otto's grandfather, I'd have to say I'd be quite chuffed! I have just sent the owner an e-mail asking about their kennel names and ancestry, so will report back.

Sophie, I think you could well be right about him - his coat does look similar to Bertie's. He's definitely nowhere near as hairy as Sherlock! I don't think he ever will be - I'd say appearance-wise he has more of his father in him. Temperament-wise, who knows? Sherlock and Otto could be very similar in that respect. Nlulu, how trainable have you found Sherlock? We're crossing our fingers and hoping that Otto has a bit of brain. The English Pointers were very sweet, and completely biddable, easily taught basic obedience and good behaviour (except for recall when there were deer or game-birds about...), but you could never have done advanced training with them.

I hope you have loads of fun with your new pup....Sounds like you had similar ideas to us in the decision to go for the cross breed. We were looking for a GSP but just wanted a nice pet and stumbled across the litter and once we had been to see them we had to have Sherlock. Like I said we were shocked at quite how hairy he got tho!
He was a handful when he was a tiny pup, lots of clingy behaviour but that was partly my fault so Im not sure its a breed thing.
He has turned into a very cuddly loving dog (tho we still have problems with him being very full on when he gets excited and does have a bit of a stubborn streak) As far as trainability goes he is great at his commands and picks things up extremely quickly but I have found training is easier if he thinks its his decision in the first place!
Everyone warned me about his hunting instinct but I honestly havent seen this much, the only thing he seems to hunt is my other dog who just ignores him
his recall has been amazing from very early on and he will do anything for a treat as long as Im clear on what I want.
Lack of brains is def not a problem, he seems to be a bit too clever if anything
Looking forward to hearing how Otto is and how similar they are in temperment as he grows up and of course seeing some more pics

Oh he is so cute! I love GWPs... a friends has a v old one who has had a tough working life on a farm and is now allowed to spend his retirement being spoiled... yours will be a cutie however his coat turns out!

You won't have a shortage of brains! (or at least quite unlikely you won't) Like others have said there maybe a stubborn streak would love to know the lines if you find out as Andsal have some GSPs that are slightly related to my GSP.

When I saw your pup's mum I thought she might be one of Spooks descendants. He's a lovely dog and has done well in the show ring.

If you look at their GWP page, you will see Spook has almost as much white on as the bitch in question.

Solid black is a legitimate colour in GSPs, as is "factor white" (no dark hairs or ticking mixed in) with just a bit of colour.

I think "passionate about black" means they have identified a gap in the market.

Aww your new pup is gorgeous!! I have a Pointer myself (English) and she is so lovely and I do wonder sometimes whether in the future I will get her another Pointer friend and I do like the look of the GSP's and GWPs.

Oooh, dont get me started on Andsal!! She no longer breeds GWP's for various reasons. She sold her brood bitch once she'd had more than enough litters of pups out of her (both KC reg and none reg litters). White factor GWP's are rare in this country, we dont tend to favour them and neither do Germany but you will find that the Americans are keen on white factor German pointers. Hence to say they do well in the showring over there but not here.

GWPs' with quite a bit of white ticking in them will be a bit longer haired than darker ones because white hairs grow longer and are softer. Generally, solid lover GWP's have a much shorter coat with a lack of undercoat. The hairier they are as a pup, the hairier they will be when they become adult.

My Lottie was very white as a pup but, darkened as she matured. She looks grey and brown now.

Here are some photos of Otto taken today, now 8 weeks old. No sign of any wirecoat. Apart from a bit of an upset tummy (which is pretty much sorted out now) and a lot of yipping when left alone, he's lovely.

He's lovely he does look like a shorthair but can almost see a little bit of wirehair expression.
