Alot of people seem to think show dogs woddle around a ring and do nothing else! Fact of the matter is, alot of show people share showing as a hobby with their dogs and are possibly not intrested in working - Doesnt mean the dogs wouldnt excell in working as well as showing. There are people on this forum, and others I know in other breeds that do well in both..

I think they are lovely, all show dogs of course, although I expect they could do a days work. I find none of them exaggerated in any way.

you cant say that if the dogs never been worked:?
...... if its a working breed i think its important that it is proven it can do just that...otherwise its a farce imo.

Two examples of slightly longer legged, leaner dual champions from yesteryear, when proven ability was a more important part of the equation ......

I agree with that, I think it would be great if this was to be proven in the show ring, with a dog having to prove itself in its working capabilites aswell as matching the breed standard as closely as possible, then everyone will know what a dog can/can't do.

I've seen him and a number of his siblings in the flesh (and the rest of the dogs there) - he has three full siblings with 0/0 hips and elbows - that is going some :D

In case anyone is interested in the pedigrees behind these dogs, Int CH Carpenny Walpole (recently sadly deceased, a prolific producer and sad loss to the breed) -

    http://www.retriever-breeder.com/jpg/stud/lab/dario.jpg

Is sire to CH Winsleywood Waterloo JW SCHM and Abbeystead Wager, he is also sire to Rockledge Wordsmith of Carpenny who is the sire of Songwriter)

Walpole's sire is Hawksmoor Webster - half brother to that black bitch someone posted a picture of earlier.

Both my yellow girl and chocolate boy come from the Carpenny Kennel - both have Walpole behind them and are super dogs :D

Yes I can - I havent said it would be brilliant.. I said just because the owners have no intrest in working their show dog, doesnt mean the dog wouldnt be good at it/excell in that area! ;-)

That would take showing right back to it's roots, before Crufts even existed, a nice thought, but I don't think it's going to happen unfortunately, there are too many divided opinions and lots of people insisting they are 100% right. You only have to look at spaniels and some of the hounds and terriers, they're even further apart than Labs, yet some breeds that can still be worked, are very much the same either in the show ring or out working, mainly the HPR's I think.

I find the fat debate very interesting, some folk firmly believe that their dog isn't fat, and yet any working folk I know would stick it on a diet straight away and get some muscle mass on it. Some show folk do very much keep their dogs lean and trim, but others openly admit they put weight on their dogs to show them. They are obviously doing so to try and be successful at showing, which is wrong in my view, but then you get show people who have critiques telling them their dog needs to loose a bit, so obviously there's a vast difference of opinion between some judges, surely?

Are you actually reading what Im saying!? I said just because its a show dog that isnt worked doesnt mean it wouldnt be good at it - no where did i say it would be brilliant, or anything else. Just you couldnt judge and say show dogs cant work, because alot arent... although them that I know that are seem to do just fine, in both areas ;)

I know for a fact most if not all of our CC's would still be able to do what they were bred for, just happens I have no intrest in doing it.

Exactly you dont know unless you try ....

If dogs had to do both it would make a lot of breeders walk the walk ;) tbh I think that in breeds where there are a split the breeders of working and showing should work together (not necc their dogs ;)) and realise that they both love the breed that they have, if for different reasons, and that they can work together to improve the breed, the people who work know what they look for, the people who show know what they are looking for, if everyone got off their high horse and did more with each other the breeds may not be so split.

Thats nice - my point is just because they dont, doesnt mean they cant.. nothing more, nothing less.

Our Spinone doesnt work - doesnt mean he couldnt if I tried. Thats all I was trying to point out!
