    Labrador colours, a guess anyone?

They are one of the most popular breeds, and yet after reading another thread tonight, thought I'd start one just to ask, how many colours people think there are, and what those colours are? Not to catch anyone out, but hopefully to show just how easy it is to start myths about the different available colours of a breed.......

Obviously there will be very knowledgeable folk out there, so if we can let people have a chance at answering first, I've got a few pics to post as well, and hope other Lab owners will join in.

I don't have a tele licence, so am spared the ravages of television, but it was the term 'golden' that prompted me to post.....

Just for interest, this is a photograph of 'Nell', a St John's Dog, and one of the founders of the Labrador Retriever as the breed we know today, note the white paws....

I always thought too there were just yellow, black and then chocolate? That the Fox red was just dark yellow?:?

Black, Yellow and Chocolate, with variations in shades, is what I've been led to believe.

Hamish, our fox red lab, is registered yellow. Fox red is an easier way of describing his colour, so fox red he is!

Exactly right, yellow, black and chocolate, with fox red coming under yellow. Another question, which were the original two colours for Labradors? Bearing in mind, this is from my memory of reading up about Labradors, so I could very well be off the mark here, but all answers and contributions very much appreciated, hopefully we'll all learn a bit more, and may be able to apply the same kind of thinking to other breeds......

I think black, yellow and chocolate and I remember seeing a pic of a black and tan lab before.

That's one of the colours, of the original St John's Dog, brought over from Newfoundland, my understanding is that there were two colours.

I thought over a period of time he brought all 3 colours over? Sure I have read that some where before. Not that I have a clue about labradors.

But his first two brought over were black and choclate?

I have no idea, but I think probably black and yellow? Have no idea why I should think this to be honest, but it's what my gut thinks!

    Dilutes? Silver? Champagne?

I heard of silver labs somewhere ... seem to remember there was some controversy over whether they were outcrossed to weims to get the colour or something .... or am I talking out of my rear?

I don't know where I hear these things from.

Although, the bottom ones look red ... like a toller or something. Very nice though

All different shades of brown/chocolate if you ask me! From a breed point of view, I havent a clue! I can imagine some of them are described as rare colours though!

A really light shade of chocolate??

It all goes back to having variations of a colour. Our Hamish is 'fox red' get told he can't possibly be a pedigree lab, he must be crossed with something!

Vicki_Ann, you are most certainly not talking out of your rear! A lot of the so called silver Labs do certainly have a weimy look about them, as it happens those pics show the same bitch, my very own pale chocolate girl, also misold as silver to the unknowledgeable, she's most likely a dilute, as you very well thought.

Now then, the same bitch, has bolo spots, any inklings what they are? Really not trying to state the obvious to those who know, but trying to introduce a bit of knowledge, to those who may be interested.....
