i am planning ahead to bring home a puppy next year (2011) and so i am seeking information on breeders that breed the ikc standard staff or a non registered more athletic type staff. the only reputable breeders (i.e non gumtree) i know of breed the short, fat variety of which i am not keen on. if anyone has and contacts please get in touch, regards, Chris
Are you refering to the "Irish sbt" type?. Haven't come across an ethical breeder yet sorry. However, you will find plenty of that type in rescue, including pups. You also need to remember that your taller more athletic type sbt, may get caught up in the pitbull type dragnet, caused by the dangerous dogs act. I don't suppose I have to tell you what that means. P.s. Welcome to the forum.
Which IKC? I would be wary of choosing a dog that can so easily appear "typy" and know of no decent breeders at all ... don't think they exist for this type of dog - as anyone with welfare in mind wouldn't breed for illegal looking dogs
there is no SIBTC anymore as I think it closed if your lookig for a decent dog have a look for sparpit lines or Amos banes lines or stockade this maybe illegal as they may be over the golden rule of 16 inch lol. I would not take onboard the other comments as there are many ethical breeders out there who do not breed to the standard as performance over looks as for being illegal would not be worried as there is more emphasis on owners rather than breed and a lot of people on here enjoy scaremongering unless you will be scaring the general public and hanging on street corners Im sure you have nothing to worry about and with the melting pot. The different breeds involved in the sbt make up and mongrels being registered as pure at the beginning of the K.C there will be different size sbts. There are many old breeders that put apbt in there lines and ebt as early as the 50s as outcrosses as you cannot continually breed in small gene pools without outcrossing every so often, so there has been no honesty from the start some also claim pug but who knows?? Dont get an IKC unless it is an Irish kennel club registered dog or look for an athlectic type kc dog?
The SIBTC website is still up but links to the IKC Site, and regarding standard, why do the IKC - INTERCONTINENTAL KENNEL CLUB, have a standard,if breeders don't use them ? Read it,it isn't that different form the SBT Standard is it ? The sparpit kennels, they had KC Registered Staffords, the kennel owned by the Sparks, they had good typical staffords that were shown, they tended to be 17-18 inches in height but did well in the showring.Whether they still show and breed I don't know.
.... how is it scaremongering? ... if your dog falls into what they think is 'type' and you have no paperwork proving otherwise(kc papers).. the dog could be taken away...its not scaremongering it is the truth.....fact is most of the numptys get away with it,whilst the 'innocent' owners and dogs tend not to :-(... the way the country is with dogs at the mo....is the risk worth it?
[link removed] IKC (Intercontinental Kennel Club) has done wonders for the stafford breed by keeping to the original working standard, Not many could say that about the KC could they. I'v persoanlly met quite a few IKC staffs at athletic events up and down the country, all of which were conformationally sound with excellent temps and lots of drive. Again, not many could say that about KC dogs could they.
Oh and KC papers don't hold up in court just like no other paperwork does ie letter from vets or from any other registry.
Have they really ? Did they help out with fiancial costs etc when some of these dogs were seized in merseyside ? Did they support the owners ? and where for that matter were the breeders ? What are you saying here ? That KC registered show dogs wouldn't be able to compete ? that they don't have excellent temperaments and not sound in conformation ? I beg to differ.
one of my regular customers has the most stunning Staffie bitch. She's a KC standard show type and VERY athletic. I think she would be capable of competing in any canine activity. She has a great temperament and plenty of drive. Why do people assume that standard Staffies can't work? I've seen some that are very short in the muzzle and leg, but most are very fit looking dogs and wouldn't be subject to our current legislation (we would hope!)
Hit a nerve have I ? Do any registries help out seized dogs ? I do agree if the breeders didn't bother to help then shame on them. But if you are going to keep IKC/working type staffords that can very easily fit type then you run the risk daily of getting your dogs seized. I meant the standard of the IKC is better/healthier/more functional/more true to a working breed etc etc IMO than the KC one, but saying that my favourite working staffords that I see regulary are from KC lines but fit more to the IKC standard because that's what the breeders were aiming for. It doesn't matter what registry the dogs with it matters how the dog is structually/temp wise and it's ability.
Nope, don't think so yes the KC did, when seized dogs owners appeared in court, Where were the IKC ?All the dogs that were seized were not KC Registered, yet the KC part funded a lawyer and had a representative in court, likewise so did Deed Not Breed. Did the IKC ? Exactly. The IKC standard is not that different to the SBT standard is it ? Maybe height that's about it Of course it matters to those who want a dog to resemble it's breed and if they wish to compete in activities,as you said earlier a IKC dog is far more likely to be seized for resembling Pitbull type. Not a chance I'm willing to take when you can get the same temperament and ability from a well bred, breed standard SBT.
Im sure if you have a well behaved dog you will feel no heat this was even quoted by the RSPCA inspector as all he was interested in was dog fighting and aggressive dogs period. If you are a numpty who claims to have a pit and tells everyman and his dog and cant control it you will feel heat simple also of late the media have taken a turn and now banging on about deed not breed,if you are worried take out an insurance with sacs and if you have trouble they provide legal assistance. As for the IKC not the irish kennel club after all the heat they changed there breed standard, and is full of numptys and A frame champions stroking there own egos and how does that prove it has the minerals. Also its very clicky and some of there best friends all have CH status lol to be honest some of them are the biggest puppy peddlers too as they can bump up the price once they have an IKC CH. Ed did hold proper shows back in the 80s with proper dogs but those days are long gone
