I often see pics of GSD puppies with ears that are upright but lean to the middle. Just wondered if this is due to nature or glue
Its natural, alot of breeds ears are all over the place when puppies. Teething can play a big part in it.
I think it's one of the cutest things about the GSD pups. Their ears are all over the place sometimes for ages. Ailsa's always pointed eastwards and then went up and down during teething, eventually settling down, I mean UP. Jake's went up properly around about 13 weeks and that was it really.
peeps will disagree with me but.... thats an old wives tail and has no medical backup..think peeps conect it because the ears sort themselves out at the same time the teeth do answer to the original question... its to do with the weight of them.. Tupacs touched for ages
Thanks for your answers, I am still thinking it is the glue that creates the inward setting that I am refering to.....I know their ears are all over, same with my dogs (as pups) but they have never been like the GSD ones I have am talking about. Surely gravity would not allow them to just fall into the middle and stay set that way?
Prick eared dogs do go up & down as puppies as the cartilege & muscles develop, this usually is at the same time as they lose their milk teeth. Keewee who is a BC from a Prick eared dad & classic semi erect eared mother(not tipped like the show dogs & Rough, Smooth Collies & Shelties ears)has her ears up, down, & all over the place at the moment, I do hope they go up, but it won't change her if they don't ! Her brother, Ike's, ears went up & have stayed up since he was 4 weeks old. I've had a GSD who had his ears up from birth, when all the others ears dropped forward his were up & stayed that way !!
Definitely nature! Both the GSDs I have had from pups ears were up, down, one up, one down etc until both went up properly. Why would you think it was glue??!!
In our experience the teething plays a massive part. Certainly has with puppies we have had. Ears can stand erect at 9 or so weeks old and then when going through a bad patch of teething dropping again, sometimes even dropping just one ear. and then the ears standing soild again by 6months. and this defo has nothing to do with the weight of the ears as the HL cresties have very thin ears with no hair or little hair to start with
Defo natural not glue. I can't see pet puppy owners using glue, yet almost all GSD babies I see have bonkers ears for a while.
hi DD .. when i said 'due to weight' i was on the understanding the op meant when the ears 'touch' not if they are erect or not. .. also ears are not connected to gums.
Of course the gums are not connected to the ears. But imo mouth pain can affect the ears. I know it myself from having tooth ache it can affect my ears. we dont have to feel the same, but I really do feel the pain from teething can affect the ears and from watching pups I would still say the same.
Well, I have always wondered about some of the GSD pup ears I have seen (pics), how funny they look leaning so into the middle and how comes they stay that way until they have their 'adult' ears. I stumbled across a website with a pup with such ears and it said they were glued.
I have a breeder friend and in desperation she does at times glue the ears of her pups but to my knowledge it has never worked.
