    I dont see anything wrong in breeding for colour, obviously everything else would need to be considered first and foremost. Its only like someone having a preference for a particular breed, some people also prefer different colours.

    Personally I wouldn't buy a pup from a breeder who bred for colour. In working collies colour is of no significance at all, and out of the thousands of working dogs the majority are black/white, so I would question why someone was breeding just "other colours".

    However if a buyer were wanting a collie pup as a pet or for a sport then they wouldn't have the same considerations in any event, and colour/looks may be more important to them.

    I know someone who does high level obedience, and she certainly has a preference.

    I think everyone has a pregerence, I personally much prefer black and white, classic marked collies (dont tell mace) but when picking a pup for pet, or hobbies such as obedience I think colour certainly should be the last thing to consider. I wouldnt go to a breeder, breeding just for colour either!

    Because it was said that if the dog is a working dog people dont have a preference over colour.

    But an obedience dog isn't a working dog imo.

    When I bought Thorgeir, he was the last pup left, so no choice of colour, but it was of no matter - he was so incredibly pretty that I would probably have chosen him anyway!

    It is in mine. So you would only class a working dog as one that works for its keep, like a farm dog?

    Yep - a working dog to me is a dog that has a job to do ie sheepdog, police dog, guide dog, SAR dog. Obedience/agility/flyball etc area all hobbies or sports - so I could consider those type of dogs to be sport or hobby dogs.
