I have seen a staffie/lab cross over the park (close size to GR) and it does look like a pitbull! Large staffie head on a long legged, muscular body. These will more than likely be strong, very energetic dogs that to the untrained eye look like pitballs! If these pups go to owners without the experience to handle this type of dog then they are in for a sad life indeed... Can I just add - don't most dog rescue places spay females before they rehome them?
There are a few methods and there is a blood test availble which looks for the hormone relaxin (I think) but no urine test as bitches go through the same hormonal process after her season whether pregnant or not. You can also palpate. However, this is not the issue here, she was aware that her bitch had been mated, supposedly accidentally, and therefore could have easily had the dog jabbed by the vet within days, long before the eggs had even implanted in the womb which would have solved this problem. There is no breed or standard of what these pups are going to come out like as it is a cross of two breeds. I understand your enthusiasm, but people (including myself) become concerned due to the age of the dog, the circumstances you got her (being a rescued dog, a big part of understanding rescue is that the dog was not wanted and creating a litter from the dog is only adding to the problem) and not being a vet checked dog (for any hereditary problems, runs a bigger risk of problems being passed down to the pups)
I can't quite believe what I am reading here... You allowed your rescue Staff to mate with a Golden Retriever and think that is brilliant??? I had two entire boys and a entire girl and she never was bred and they live in the same house... know why? Because I don't want to breed and add to many thousands of unwanted puppies and because I knew where she was 24 hours a day whilst in season! At night in the garden she was on a longline... I live next to a road and never had any problems at all! I suspect if this is genuine, you wanted this litter to happen, to make some money from a new 'designer' dog... have you got the name of the cross sorted yet? All those Staffs and staff X's in rescue and you add to their number, that is if your bitch makes it through birth!
Sounds like you're used to being an irresponsible breeder.... There's your answer. If you have ANY thought for your bitch, you will act immediately on this and possibly save your staffie's life. I'll be interested to see what you do...........
Thanx! It's just that I thought she was saying she was waiting to have the scan done to see if the bitch is pregnant at all.... and that made me wonder if that is truly the only way to tell... and I totally agree that this pregnancy should be terminated asap... very irresponsible to let this continue!
If you loved and cared for your dog, you simply wouldn't wait, she would be straight down the vets for the mismate jab to stop a possible pregnancy happening. If I were you I wouldn't even be waiting to take her for a scan, you have the power to stop anything before it happens. The Jab varies from vet to vet but should cost no more than £50-£60.
or even better if an accident occurs , then she could have booked the bitch into be spayed, problem solved and a problem that wont happen again!! That's my understanding too, so not sure what her next step will be them, but I think its just a conformation of pregnancy for her. By the time the scan is dont the bitch will be about 5 wks along (I think thats about right ) so the decision is then even harder to abort a litter. But then that may be her ploy, she could nto possible abort a litter so far along! Without question the right thing for her to do for the bitches sake is one of two things. Take her to the vet and have her spayed NOW!! Take her to the vet and have the jab now, and then spayed as soon as it is possible . Then we may believe the poster does have her bitches welfare at heart.
As has been said before the rescue sites I go to daily are full of staffs and staffy crosses .They seem to be cheap to buy and easy to get rid of when not wanted .. Do goldens ever have red noses by the way ???
I quite enjoyed the way the OP dropped casually into the thread that she`s already bred one litter of staff crosses when it was going a bit quiet. Bridges and goats spring to mind.
I was going through this thread and you wrote what I was going to put! Now back to reading the rest..... right finished it! This has to be a windup surely... this OP doesn't even know what they are talking about - they give dog owners a bad name especially staffie owners... no wonder the media have a field day with this sort of example. OP seems oblivious that her dog could die from this pregnancy if genuine; she allowed a bitch in season to mate with a larger dog; is very vague and now seems to have vanished after feeling we are bullying her! Like someone already said, many Lab/GR cross Staffs can look like Pitbulls which would then suggest that the wrong type of people would want the pups and maybe cause any future owners to have problems with the Authorities proving their pup/dog is not a PB type dog. God help that OP's dogs!
most decent rescues spay all their bitches before rehoming, i am having a bad day on the rescue front today, and this just makes me want to cry
I really do hope that the OP is not trying to breed to order, could she be some kind of chav scum who has these types of breeds (Staff and Rottie) as a status symbol? A GR/Staff cross would be very desirable to like minded chavs...
I agree! Just shows that people need educating about dogs, especially certain breeds. It is bad enough that Staff and other "bullybreeds" get a bad press from the media but this just makes the whole situation worse... this makes me so:twisted:
Although we may well have a troll here - it is also likely the truth - there are plenty places where people still think breeding is something every bitch should do So Hello and wellcome to Dogsey If you hang around and read some of the threads here you will see that many people are involved in dog rescue and have to deal first hand with the overpopulation of dogs in the country I can understand it sounds exciting to have a litter of pups but honestly there are quite a few reasons to stop this happening You say it was a mistake - and thats fine, accidents DO happen, its how you deal with it after that counts 1st the poor girl hasnt been with you v long, she needs time to settle and trust you else giving birth will be traumatic for her She is (you think) very young, having a litter is mentaly and physically very demanding, she is at a higher risk of her/all the pups dying or her rejecting the pups She has a bladder condition - so not in best health You havent had time to get to know her to know if she has any medical or behavioural problems that she might pass on to her pups She is small he is big - ouch!! Pups are likely to be too large for her The cross could well end up looking like a Pit Bull and you might find yourself in all sorts of troubles Please dont wait to see if she is preggers, if she tied then more than likely there are pups in there. Go to the vets and get the jab now Sorry, I know this all sounds harsh and like you are being bullied, that is not the case at all, people are very concerened for your bitch. I dont believe you should be breeding from a rescue anyway but even if you were this is NOT the time and this is NOT the cross you want to be producing, get the jab and then decide what you want to do once you have her healthy and you know her better
I think the giving of advice about breeding staffy crosses from someone who supports poodle cross breeding is a tad hypocritical! Becky
Do you? Well you are entitled to your opinion! The thread is about a Staffy mated possibly with a GR so Staffy crosses are relevent and I giving my opinion that is RELEVENT to the thread. Whatever dog I choose to have is not relevent - I was thinking of the dog and puppies... were you? I have to say that Ben above has put in a better way than many of us on here and hopefully this is a trol and not a genuine incident where this poor young dog could suffer even more.
Actually I lay the blame for the explosion of cross breeding solely at the feet of the poodle cross breeders for making it 'acceptable' and legitamising this type of breeding because until the anything a poo/doodles came along there was nowhere near the number of cross bred litters around and certainly not bred deliberately and advertised at ridiculous prices so I think it is a legitimate point to highlight. I actually think it is disgusting that doodle breeders seem to set themselves apart from other cross breeders and have the audacity to complain about other people cross breeding other breeds. Becky
