Info about NI, Husky type dogs etc please? Questions

I have noticed there are many more breeds and crosses of "Husky type dogs" for want of a better term and as I don't know too much about them as curious about the dogs as they are gorgeous looking but I would love to know more about their personality and temperaments please?

Do a search for them on this site.

and then make a wise decision!

there is only one kinda 'husky' (of course there are other northern breeds)
the rest are crosses and are a gamble as in which bit they take after.;-) ;-)

I am just interested as to their popularity and the differences.

Sadly Northern Inuits have come into a great deal of criticism, due to the secrecy, lies and bad breeding practices around this type of dog.. and rightly so.

Many young dogs have died unexpectedly.. and many genetic conditions exist due to using strays and crossbreeds in the founding dogs.. that were never health tested. There is epilepsy, hip dispacia, Addisons disease and a few more that have shown up in the "breed" that is less than 20 years old.

Nobody even knows who or what the founding dogs were and where they come from. The different societies and associations representing these dogs.. all lie to each other and their members.

Every dog that has been produced are extremely inbred... don`t go by the 3 gen pedigrees that are passed out.. go back a few gens further and you`d be horrified. A data base with a big majority of these dog are on.. owned by previous committee members of said groups.. showed many examples of these peds to Dr Jeff Sampson genetics consultant to the KC.. he too was horrified at the level of inbreeding.. and advised that these dogs should be outcrossed.

I sadly believed all the spiel surrounding these dogs on breeders websites and from the breeders themselves. I have 2 NI`s.. (which are 3 & 4 years old) in themselves are great with their family, they are beautiful and loving dogs. When they are out and about it`s a nightmare. My two are very dog aggressive, even though they were well socialised as pups. They are extremely prey driven.. god forbid they ever got hold of a small furry. They are destructive due to separation anxiety issues.

Admire them from afar.. that`s my advice.

Thanks for that - I only know of a few dogs of that sort of type though that isn't meant to sound derogaroty; a Japanese Akita who is a wonderful gentle girl anda Malamute youngster that is very friendly with our dogs and theya re gorgeous looking dogs - very popular.

I would agree with Janie here. I have 3 northern inuits aged between 2 and 4 1/2. 2 of them do have epilepsy in their lines which I was devastated to find out about. Personality wise I find all NI's totally different. My lot certainly are not a nightmare out and about. They are all great with other dogs and we compete in agility and obedience. My dogs also have very high prey drive and would never be allowed near cats, sheep etc, but I have seen NI's that are fine.

As much as I love my dogs I would never have another NI. My new pup is a groenendael and I couldn't be happier with him

i would like to add...my n.i is very happy and healthy...but i would not go out of my way to get another,as i view my girlie as a one off (like most crosses).;-)

I must research the differences between these different names as there are so many and I don't know one from the other.

Can I ask, why you have changed breed, when you have previously said that the NI you had latest was bred from excellent stock, and the breed didnt have the "problems" that many associated with them?

There are many reasons why I changed breed. I chose the bsd as I wanted a dog that would fit into our lifestyle and would enjoy showing, obedience and agility. Callan is now nearly 9 weeks old and the most lovable confident pup I have ever had

Sorry didn't explain - well I know there are huskys, malamutes, Akitas, but hadn't heard of the NI's until recently, then there are the hybrids and Huskymutes and so on that's all I meant... they are all a new and interesting area to me.

AKita's are not "husky" types..

The NI and all the other fancy names are simply crossbreeds of the proper northern breeds (none of which include akita)

I have 2 Northern Inuit Dogs and can honestly say they are brilliant. I love them dearly and love them like I would any breed of dog.
Im totally impressed with your new dog Jane (Abbi). Have you left the NIS can I ask?
