i live in scotland so cant help with the geography !!
However speaking from our point of view, because many of our dogs are still in homes, alot of the time the new owners wont meet them until they are rehomed with them, they get loads of info etc on them from us, and if its feasible and the dog is in kennels or foster then they can meet, or if they have other dogs etc then we can arrange it - otherwise its a straight meet and the dog moves in one go.

If its a pup it would be in foster so would be able to meet - so it very much depends on the situation of the dog in question ( but I am speaking from our rescue point of view - cant speak for anyone elses)

Even if a rescue is out of your area they would normally still try to arrange a homecheck aetc for the right home for their dog and the more persistent you are the more responsive you will find rescue.

we homecheck / assess and transport all over scotland using volunteer networks.

    Hope that helps:)

Aww thank you yes that helps alot :)

I did think i would only be able to adopt a dog from my area due to homechecks ect... i didn't realise you could arrange it for different areas!

Even if we end up buying from a breeder i want to rescue at some point in the next year or so, i'll do a lot of research into it :)

    Hi jadey,

    Im from preston too!

We got our staffy rescue from RSPCA on Longridge Road in Ribbleton.

At the time we lived in a flat near moor park and hubby worked full time and i was at uni,

Leicestershire is near birmingham way from my poor geography!

When we got china she was 2-3 yrs old and still very puppyish and i have to agree getting her used to going down a flight of stairs for the loo wasnt too bad!

    Ooo small world

Yes thats where i've sent a volunteer form in and when i went i feel in love with a few dogs, mainly a staffy/american bulldog and a rottweiler... i do have a soft spot for rotties :)

And they re-homed her to you with those hours as well as a flat? They must not have liked me then haha Or the girl i spoke too i'm going to pop back this weekend i think they have some lovely staffies advertised on the website :)

So it wasn't hard getting her used to not having her own garden to do her business in?

    xx

She did have a garden...but it was down a flight of metal stairs into the back yard. so she couldnt just run out the door to pee! It was an older couple who homechecked us..i would really pursue it and make a case for your self! they were fine with us!

    Good luck with it hun!

Ahh i see, we dont have that where we are just a big grass area at the front!

Yeah i might do, think i'll go and have a look this weekend and talk to someone and explain the situation and see what they say, i only work part-time and the dog will always have someone checking on them or go to a family members so thats not a problem, she said i would have to appeal to be able to rehome a dog to an apartment.

    And thank you

    xx

the more persistent you are proves how much you want the dog - so I say be as persistent as possible and explain every solution to them :)

    Try this rescue too,
    http://www.sbtrescue.co.uk/

It's run by Chris Clark and they rehome to all parts of the uk,they homecheck, not sure if they would be able to help with transport, you would need to find that out.

I know they do have younger dogs in, even litters of pups and bitches ready to whelp so it may be worth enquiring.

Sadly they are thousands of staffies and crosses who are healthy and friendly that get destroyed regularly.

i really hope you are able to rescue one. :)

    hear hear!

The length people who work in rescues go to to help you find your new friend is heartwarming you know..

Just recently we transported a dog a fair distance just to meet the prospective owners' current dog (as they didn't have a car) and we were prepared to take it back to the original owners if the dogs didn't get on after careful introductions (they did get on great ;-))

Where there is a will there will be away. In the past Staffords have been transported in relay from Cornwall to scotland for rescue.

You may have to do more if you want a pup as they are easier to re home.
Bare in mind if you buy a pup now that may be an other obstacle to rescue later.
I am not sure the exact location of the pups just that it was Liestershire that was looking for the foster mum.
Location level with Birmingham further east just off M1

Is that another obstacle as you can only rehome dogs that are dog friendly? This would be an obstacle we already have as my boyfriends brother has a dog who we have staying overnight at ours at least once a week and we also spend a lot of time at his house in which any dog/s we had would also have to come and obviously get on with the other dog as we will still be having in over at ours (hes a lhasa apso/Pug - black fluffy and so cute!) So even rehoming a dog now it would have to be dog friendly and we would obvisouly take Zebedee to meet whichever dog we were interested in rescueing :)

Aww thank you i will have a look and give them a call, we can always travel to pick up a dog its just more than one tripe might be more difficult!

I know it's terrible and i hope we are able to rescue one too :)

Aww that's really nice and glad they ended up getting on! We would be able to go and pick up a dog maybe not just make several visits if it was really far away!

These are likely the ones but they are not with a rescue Mum they are with an other Stafford owner who had a litter almost weaned. There were 5 but two died first day. The three survivors are doing well by all accounts. I have seen pictures of them on a breed forum.

In all honesty, house training a puppy in a flat is going to be very difficult, for instance just as an example you will have to take the pup outside to the grass area at least 10 times a day, and I am being conservative in that, not to mention you will have to do the same through the night,... that's if you want a clean dog in the house.

Personally , if I was you , I would wait till you buy a house, (if you are planning this next yr) its not so long really, and the time will give you the chance to research the breed completely, look up reputable breeders.. speak to breeders , you will get a feel for them too.

Also you and your bf could visit as many dog shows as you can to see and speak to breeders exhibitors , this is an invaluable way to "get a feel" for a breeder and the dogs themselves.

The trouble is , for every well bred Staffy out there , there will be 50 not so well bred, some the breeding will be dubious, along with health and temperament not being taken into consideration.

Staffies are a wonderful breed (a close relative has one, he is fabulous) but you need to also be aware they come with a negative reputation:cry: seen by many members of the public, so the more you can do to buy reputable the better for you and your dog.

As Danni says go to any rescue in the country and they will be inundated with Staffies and Staffy X`s  but I understand you want a pup, and as you say in the future you may be able to re home another in need.

Can you get to Crufts this yr.. go on Terrier day if you can ( is that Fri) or if you cant go on Sat or Sun, and go to Discover Dogs, to the Staffie stand, you will find all the right information you will ever want on there about the breed , not to mention you will meet some wonderful Staffies,, and their owners who will tell you truthfully if the breed is for you.

    Good luch in your seach,
