I have previously posted elsewhere on the site but I am wondering if anyone specifically has experience with anal gland problems in JRT? Bentley is 19/20 weeks old and the vet expressed his glands 10 days ago as he has developed a rash.:-( We are looking to change his food; can anyone recommend food that is renowned to be good for JRT's? I'm in Germany and want to make a well informed choice before attempting to get the good stuff shipped out here! We will be changing him over to adult food at 6 months and there is a JRT specific in the Dutch shop, can anyone recommend specific breed foods?
Anal glands should empty themselves. I personally would give a raw meaty diet. If you don't want to feed raw then try a sprinkle of bran on his food. Or Linseeds What you want is firm stools.
What a wee shame to go through that so young, finding a diet that suits him will sort out his bum probs, my Toro does have sensitive anal glands so we have to be very careful about her diet, what we have found works best is Fish 4 Dogs complete, they have that in the morning with a slice of raw fish, and raw meat at night, Toro went through the mill not so long ago after having surgery to remove sox from her stomach, intestine and colon, finding the right diet was a nightmare as her wee tum was so sensitive, try googling the fish 4 dogs and see if they do a puppy variety...good luck x
You need a diet high in fibre. Ask your vet about Eukanuba Intestinal, they do puppy food as well. Although it is a prescription diet [only from the vet] it is excellent for any problems associated with the digestive/bowel tracts. Helen
Thanks so much! All really good advice. I am really interested in Fish4dogs and would like to try him on that but we are in Germany  And again about asking vet about prescription diet, as we are in Germany not sure if they do that...I will keep that one in my back pocket if nothing else works. I feel terrible as we really wanted to give him a great start in life and I feel like I've failed him
Big companies like Eukanuba (USA) export world wide. We are in Ireland! Ask at your vets, does no harm to ask. Helen
