That is pure rubbish nobody knows what the actual founder mix was. It's all pure guesswork. Even what little paperwork there was is not accurate.

Heather : this is nothing to do with this topic. How dare you tell me what is in my animals. I refuse to talk to you about it, but I will send you a PM.

Gnasher, you change your breed of dog to suit you at the time, one minute a ute, next a huskamute and then a wolf cross :? :?
you will never know what breeds are truly in the ute so what if you know the lines, they are from cross breeds with 'unknown origin'
fine tho, thats cool ;-) but stick to threads about letting 'ute's' off the lead cos then you may know what you are talking about!!

Sorry lovey, I misinterpreted what you were saying. So sorry. We are both entitled to have our very clearly different ideas and points of view about leads, and I should accept your point of view. Sibes are getting very popular round these parts as pets, and I can honestly say I have NEVER encountered a nasty one, even those who have never been allowed to run free. The Huskamute who lives in our village is absolutely gorgeous, and he and Tai romp and mock fight for hours. Years ago we stayed with some people in Norfolk who had a whole pack of 'em - there were around 50 I think living in an amazing enclosure, and to go in there was a fantastic experience. We were just mugged, there is no other word for it !! Licked to death almost, it was such fun, we so enjoyed it.

gnasher dont,i know what you are going to say to her
infact, what breeds in your dogs are very relevant to this topic, you are not experienced enough to give the sweeping statements you do about sibes!!!!

Mick : thanks for sharing those wonderful pictures of your amazing dogs! Are they not just fab? They clearly do have a very good and very spoiled life with you and your missus !!

I don't know what to say really. I think just the same as I said to Sid ... you are entitled to your opinion, as I am to mine. Clearly, your dogs are extremely well looked after, look very fit ... thanks to their work out in harness ... and certainly, I do believe that if you have a pack of huskies as you have, and you let them off lead together en-masse you could have an ever-disappearing cavalry charge on your hands!! But for those who have 1 or 2 max huskies, I will for ever remain convinced that you can let them off lead, certainly in you, the human, is on a faster mode of transport than your legs, such as a horse or a bike. Before we used a particular type of training method on Hal, his recall was notoriously bad. He wouldn't run away, he would jjust not come. Unless we took him out on our mountain bikes, or he came with me on my horse. Then the walk became more of a hunt, with us as Head Hunter, because we could travel much faster than Hal on our bikes or my horse. He barely left our sides then.

Would you not find this with your pack of huskies? Or at least one or two at a time?

    Good post Gemma!

I didn't mean that confining a dog to harness was cruel ... obviously, this is the very best way you could possibly exercise your Sibe, because it is the very thing they were bred for. Sorry, I hadn't put that very well. Perhaps what I should have said is that those people who don't work their dogs in harness, but condemn them to a life on the lead, is hellish for the poor dogs. It was a silly statement to have made, but I didn't actually mean it as I had put it !

Hi Mish : in fairness to the anti's, Sibes do have a very high prey drive. I think Gemma's post illustrates this well. So if they escape, or run away, they could cause havoc amongst the local cat population for instance!

This is really gonna be controversial ... it's the more recent wolf blood in them.

I know I do. It is because I am not happy with the whole Utonagan thing. Tai is a registered Utonagan, but I am not happy describing him as so. I prefer to call him a sibe cross mal, with a smattering of wolf, which is what he is. Hal was the same mix, but with much more wolf.

Don't forget m'dear that Eddie was one of the original breeders. I knew her very well indeed. I am prepared to say no more than that.

Blimey - shoot me dead then !! Gosh, if I had a quid for every person who spouts off the most ridiculous nonsense about Utonagans, Northern Inuits etc. etc. on Dogsey I would be a millionaire !!

I do agree I am not as experienced about Sibes as people like Gemma, Sid, Mick etc., however I am stating my own opinion. Nothing I have been told has made me change my mind. If I were ever lucky enough to own a Sibe, I would move heaven and earth to train it not to run away. To do that, I would let it off the lead right from the very start, at 8 weeks old. And I would do the same with a Mally, were I ever lucky enough to have one.

Sorry darling, but I'm going to be really rude here !!

What a load of trollop !! What could be more free-running than keeping up with a cantering horse, or racing along side a mountain bike across the fields or along the canals

Sorry but I'm going to be really rude here !!

What a load of Tosh !!

What could be more natural, more free-er than your dog running along beside you with a cantering horse! Or charging along the towpaths, or racing across the fields?

Ok - have to say it - (although you already have).....

It is 'Keeping up' or 'running with'.....not free running.

Free running (to my mind) is a dog being a dog.....running for itself - not for or with you.

Maybe you have a different definition?

To me, ANY running off lead or harness is free running !! No-one is forcing the dog to keep up with my horse, or my mountain bike. He is doing it purely because he wants to. To the dog, this is a ritualised hunt that we are going on, with us, the humans, as the hunters. Wild horses wouldn't drag them away, all they want to do is to keep up with us. They love it, it is the greatest fun for humans and dogs, and afterwards we all benefit from the exercise. Tai is getting a bit tubby because we can't bike in this weather!

According to the anti's, if he was a pure Sibe he would **** off over the horizon never to be seen again !! I am presenting them with an opportunity to let their dogs run free, with them. I just do not understand how this could be described as anything but free-running!
