Hello I have been posting pics for a while now about my new Beagle pup Monty - he came home on the 4th December and was 9 weeks old on Saturday just gone! He has settled in well, he didnt like being left alone at first and I spent days worrying and feeling sick about him crying (I was building up the time leaving him) but he is ok now and is left with amusement in the form of chews, kong, cardboard to destroy and some toys! He started off really well with toilet training and is still doing ok but he seems to have gone backwards the last 3 -4 days and is worse than when his first 2-3 days with us!!?? My sister said that her dog went through stages of getting worse is this a normal thing?? He is doing well with training and knows quite a few commands already - though he really only likes doing them for me - is this normal??? It is not that he is attached to me more just seems he responds best to training with me! Anyway sorry for the long post but would love some puppy advice from everyone - and if any of you have beagles that would be great! I have posted some pics in the pictures thread but here are a couple
Oh I just love that first picture, what an adorable little pup. I always liked beagles. First off he is very young so dont expect too much from him. I really dont expect much if anything from puppies until they are 6 months. If they are house trained at 12-16 weeks - that is just great but if not, well it all comes to those who wait. When you say he has slipped back, in what way? When you take him out do you stay with him the whole time no matter the weather? Whatever your "buzz" word is keep saying it "Busy busy Fido" [or whatever your pups name is] so that he gets to associate the words with when he does do his biz. Lavish praise when he does go. Your puppy does not think "Oh I will go indoors and do my biz inside where its nice and warm". Your puppy thinks "Oh, I need to go" and having little to no control like human babies, they "go". Its really just repitition over and over. Being gentle and kind but firm. He will soon learn. Have you got an area in the house where he can go if taken short? You can use paper or training pads. Hes just a wee bit confused at the minute but it will all fall into place. Just be consistent and enjoy the puppy days, they are over all too soon
Hi, As i said in a previous thread of yours i too have a beagle pup who is only 4 1/2 mths so by no means am i any expert. With regards to the toilet training, i took Ruby out in the garden loads to 'be quick' probably every 1-2 hours i would say be quick and if she went just praise her up. I didnt have many accidents but just assumed that it was because i was out in the garden so often, i started lengthning the time and and now she asks all the time (or just takes herself out the cat flap!!) so it must have worked! So i would just take Monty out loads so as he never has the chance to go inside, and he will get the hang of it. Ruby also know a few commands, sit, down, stay, she is very food orriantated but will do it without a treat if she is in the right mood! She also mainly only responds to be me (it is just me and my son) but i have been getting visitors to do a few bits with her so she starts to learn, and she is getting a little better. Hope you are havin as much fun with Monty as we are having with Ruby!! We are having a few noise issues when left at the moment, but i guess shes been pretty good other than that.
Sounds perfectly normal with the toliet training. He is only 9 weeks, and probably a good couple of months from being reliable still. Ups and downs are to be expected. You'll go through a week or so of having no accidents, THINKING he is house trained, then he'll suddenly go back to how you started. It is all part of the process! I find that the lightbulb just goes on one day and that is that. My youngest was clean and dry from about 16 weeks, and I think that is about the norm for expecting some reliabilty with toliet training as they have more effective control then. But all dogs are different. I know one pup that was clean from 10 weeks, yet known others that still were not completely reliable for over a year.
