Opinions On Crossing GSDs with NIDs Controversial

Oh no, not another new breed.

I took it to be a breed with established connections to an area that the Inuit people live in

They used to be Esquimaux dogs, then Eskimo dogs and now it is not PC to use those terms and Inuit has been deemed more acceptable.

From what I remember the Canadian Eskimo dog and Greenland dog were considered different breeds until DNA testing showed they had the same origins.

I am pretty sure thats who told me about it. They seemed a very open minded bunch.

About time you listened to someone else for a change and you obviously havent seen a Greenland dog for a while...last one i saw at a show looked just like one of mine????

Perhaps you should and perhaps read the recent piece in Dog World which suggests you malamute people should support the breed seeing as thats where they came from? Perhaps thats where your malamutes winter coat comes from bit of eskimo going on there ;-)

Oh maybe you were too busy reading our dogs instead and suttys pearls of wisdom on the Northern Inuit (er thats a crossbreed if ya didnt know) you two should get a column going together now all the recognised breeds are side by side in the dog papers! lol whens the next barbque?

why the need to continue, there are CVs in the uk now as well as saarloos, is there really any need now for NI types?

i would think that there is still a market for a wolf-look-a-like without any wolf content judging by the increasing numbers of Saarloos and CsV cross breeds that are needing to be re-homed.

I hand on heart feel these dogs are a "specialised" breed,

they are not for joe soap, much the same as rotties are not for joe soap,

people can water it down all they like but they never know what they will produce,

for such a specialised breed to have so many novice breeders all adding there own mix into an already troubled breed {talking NI here} is a disaster.

Yes Ive noticed this too, most are "teenagers" displaying undesirable traits that novice owners cannot deal with, of course its the dog that suffers, and people GENUINELY wanting this type of dog (for what they are not what they look like!) would be prepared for this.

Its NOT dogs with wolf content causing problems because they do not have any wolf content! Some of the dogs do cause problems at certain ages but some are always difficult so the breed is not stable. I said it earlier in the thread and i'll say it again if people want a wolf look alike then go get a proper one trouble is most people wouldnt cope with such dogs but then they wouldnt cope with lots of breeds of dog and if someone picks a dog breed just because it looks like a wolf then yeah i feel sorry for the dogs!

I disagree, its the Wolf like behaviour thats unsuitable for the pet home. The amount of CvS and Saarloos crosses taken back to their breeders is massive, yet a lot of them promote these "special" "unique" dogs when they get them, and usually on looks alone. Its a great money spinner alright, but sadly the dogs are suffering arent they.

They are sufffering yes but thats true of lots of breeds. I see a real mix of dogs in my training classes the only common denominator is usually its working type breeds that tend to be more of a problem. The csv doesnt show wolf characteristics. They are forward dogs a little stranger aware but nothing like the character of the saarloos. The saarloos i have seen are certainly more wolfy in their behaviour i wouldnt think that its the quiet, reserved dogs that are causing too many of the problems other than perhaps seperation anxiety but again thats something that lots of breeds suffer with.
