I read somewhere (when looking at the Dutch Shepherd), that brindle is a 'lost' colour in the GSD? I didn't know there used to be brindle GSDs? Is this accurate?
I have never heard of a brindle. I have heard of a panda shepherd though which is quite a unique looking pooch
I have found this: '10. Brindle B&T I can't resist mentioning the brindle, which was one of the founding patterns of the breed and seems to have become extinct. The brindling gene affected the tan ground, so that B&T's and bicolours showed a dark striping or marbling (the same effect seen in brindle boxers) over the tan which was not at all unattractive. I wouldn't hazard to guess what a brindle marked sable would look like. Hopefully, if the pattern somehow reappeared, it would not be discarded as atypical. I'm surprised that the author of that article calls Sable a colour for GSDs-it isn't a colour it is the banding pattern of the hairs
We've got a dog at training which is a GSD cross - it looks more or less like a shepherd but it's brindle. Looks a bit odd tbh
they mention Brindle here http://www.kerstoneshepherds.net/colors/patterns.htm as the lost colour & have links to follow!
