    Noisy Border Collie

Does anyone else have a noisy border collie?

My girl doesn't stop barking, and she is so high pitched sometimes. She seems to have her own language and you get different barks for different things she wants.

No, all mine (and Kip before them) have been really quite quiet (thankfully). but when they do bark, they do have particularly high pitched barks which go right through you!

They do use other noises though, Stumpy will 'woo-woo' me when I come home and Tip has started this now, though with him I'm sure he's trying to say 'huulloooo'

I always thought borders were a quite breed. Obviously no one told Becka that:roll:

They are certainly not supposed to be noisy when working, but then when working they don't get excited in the same way - they are too focused on what they are doing.

My Teagan is noisy, she barks anytime you ask her to do anything.
    Skye does the lovely woo-woo's.

saying that agility collies can be very 'gobby' whilst working!
also collies are very good at being 'control freaks' if allowed, and if a bark gets them what they want in the end?....................

Chip likes the sound of his own voice. He has a whole range of barks and yelps. He even yelps in his sleep.Dale hardly made a sound before Chip arrived. Unfortunately he's found his voice too now:-(
Mercifully they're reasonably easy to quieten down. Sam our old collie never made a sound. All different I suppose.

The only dog in our house that ever barks is the Weimaraner, and then only when she should ! lol

I think what tupac2legs said is correct, BC's are so very clever, that once they find something that gets your attention then they will continue with it ... even if its as anti-social as making a lot of noise.

I have trained all my dogs to speak on command (mostly because it is a requirement in Working Trials later on ), however, once you have trained them to 'speak' you can train them to 'shhhhh' too.

Try to get hold of a copy of Understanding the Border Collie, it is a fantastic read and there may be information in there that can help you ?

    Good luck - take care

I have the opposite...I have 2 virtually silent BC's and one extremely noisy pointer. Jed is a good guard dog and barks when he needs to and Jessie might let out a little bark when she is excited but 98% of the time, they are beautifully quiet!

My BC will often run into the garden and bark when she hears something that agitates her. I will let her bark a couple of times, tell her "good dog" (or similar) and then give her "Quiet" command. That way I get a good house dog but no excessive barking. She does not bark when working sheep. However, in the car...
