I have just been searching the kennel club site and the Hovawart came up as a breed suitable for me. I have not heard of this breed before but they sound lovely. Does anyone own one?
no but i know some in Obedience Circles, They are lovely, Nice active dogs , but not mad & not manic, clever dogs too!
Thank you The sound perfect to be honest. They sound (and look) a lot like my lad. They have a club show on in Shropshire at the start of October so I may well go along and have a nosey.
i think from your other post /threadthat they could def fit the bill! They would be heavier in Bone than your XB , but not as heavy as a BMD. They are so cute. Ive known a all Black & two B&T, but i like the Golden ones best!!!!!
Except you would probably have to walk around with a big placard saying "It Is NOT a ruddy Retriever!"
Have a look here http://www.minches.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/ This lady brought them into the country and as well as showing has done obedience agility and search and rescue with them. Tell her Anne with Beardies sent you
We used to have one stay with us whilst i worked in boarding kennels. He was a lovely big blonde male! the most stunning coat ever the owner also had a blonde bitch and a b/t bitch i have never seen one match him yet though
I always thought they were a lovely breed, but came across them ringside at Richmond, was told that they are not the most friendly towards other dogs and one was wanting to go for my pup.. SO be very careful on your lines and research on the temperament side of things.
Yes I considered one for a while and a predisposition to dog aggression was one of the negatives that a number of people mentioned - certainly something to take account of if you are socialising a pup.
I agree. Buying from the right lines and careful socialisation and management is often enough to prevent aggression. Some Malamute lines are dog aggressive, and some aren't, the same can be said of Estrelas, and many other breeds.
I know the above lady also, have done since I was young and I have to say all her dogs have been lovely. She has been taking a lovely blonde just recently and he is lovely. She does say though that people mistake him for a golden retriever
There used to be one at our heelwork to music classes-that was a nice temperament. I agree with what others say about breeding lines. We have 2 Kerry Blues and one is soft and sociable temperament and the other can be a bit feisty with other dogs-complete opposites really so you need to be careful about the line your dog comes from. When you have a rare breed it does get wearying what other peole guess it to be though! You will probably get people saying it is a Collie-cross or something like that. We have been aked if our Kerries are-Labradoodles, Scotties(!), Schnauzers (understandable), or, more usually; Poodles!
Nice dogs, had a lovely talk to a breeder at a show late last yr about this breed. He was very informative, loved the breed but made it clear they are still very much a primitive breed ans as such need the right understanding homes.
