Alsatian Shepalute Discussions

Johnderondon and Joedee. Just a quick point from my experience with FLs. As a former landrace dog with many different types (about 7 at a guess) these do not always breed true even today although the breed's ancestors have been around on this planet in Lappland for hundreds of years doing the same job of herding reindeer. Goodness knows what true is for them as working herders were selected as the best examples of the breed with which to formalise the register in the 1960s.

The alsatian shepalute is suposed to resemble this. A dire wolf.

Quite nice looking dogs.

maybe its the style of the pic ,but i think it looks kinda like a werewolf or a cross between a big cat and wolf;-) a bit mythological ??;-) ;-)

I thought it looked a bit hyena like.

It went extinct arround 10000 years ago, and there are no living decendance of this subspecies arround today.

It evolved in the america's unlike the grey wolf, wich migrated there.

Fascinating! The concept of a "breed" is even harder to nail down than I suspected.

They look like badly bred shepherds. For me they aren't distinct enough to be considered a separate breed!

This is a statement that comes around a lot and I feel a need to address it...

My gut reaction is and I'm not defending the money makers and cruel practitioners, but just those who are still driven to create the new and unique...

Because it's what we do. It's human to want the new and different. It's why there are so many well established breeds... The world does not stagnate, nor is the human imperative towards insular perfection. We are by nature innovators, inventors and chaotic. We drive to improve and expand. Though there is worth in perfecting what we have there is a basic human desire to create something new. It's in our genes .... It's why we won't settle for just the types of car that we have, or just the type of travel, or just the type of weapon, or house, or food. If we were not always driven to create and innovate, we'd still be in caves hunting with rocks... Perfect caves with amazing rocks, but never changing, or desiring change is not in our nature.

Progress is our base imperative and we are driven by the mad inventors. People willing to look at everything we have yet still say I want something different, something new, something weird or amazing or just because I can.

Then there is the 'dogs must have a purpose' argument. Technology and farming practices have moved us beyond the need for hunting companions and herders and those we have perfectly fit those roles. But we don't want only three types of dog. One for herding, one for hunting and one for the house. We want choice and colour and look, temperament and drive and style, hell we want hypoallergenic and low maintenance, some want pink and blue... give it time, we'll breed that in too! ....

The main role of a dog and the role that is going to keep them at our side and on our sofas well into the future will be soulmate by design. We seek a breed that suits us, that externalises something about our personality. Like a familiar or a 'demon' in the Pullman books. When we look for a dog, we look for one that speaks to something deep within us... and if there is not a breed that does that. then we innovate. we combine breeds that seem right, or we look in pounds for mixes and mutts that speak to us.

For as long as there are not only a thousand types of human, we will never be satisfied with even the thousands of breeds of dog.

Oh my God , I am quite sure that "culling" doesnt happen very much in the creation of any new breed at all in this day and age, and certainly doesnt occur in any breeds/new breed/designer dog or whatever you wish to see it as, that I have been involved with..

And also no puppy is "worthless" what a horrid way to put something, all dogs in a breeding program for a new breed in this day and age are sold as pet only, as for inclusion into the future, this all relys on health tests, conformation etc etc.. only 25 seperate lines are required and if you are very careful it doesnt take too many generations to get what you have set out to acheive.

Personally because the breeds I was interested in had certain traits I didnt want and some I did, there is no other breed that satisfies what I feel I can have in the new breed being created.

I find it hard to believe that in the hundreds of established (notice I didn't say recognised;-) breeds in the world, there are people who still can't find a breed with all the traits they desire. Some people are impossible! I'll admit I don't like a lot of the more 'popular' breeds, but I think a lot of that is to do with them being over bred and having undesirable personality traits bred in. I didn't know what I wanted when looking for a dog, but research goes beyond the internet and books. You have to get out there an meet actual dogs. Then you find what you actually like. I certainly wouldn't have picked Estrelas from what I have read and from many of the pictures I have seen. They are so much better in the flesh.

I'm afraid to say the alsatian shepalute breeders code of ethics does include culling puppies.

Also according to the code, a bitch is mature enough to breed if she is over 9 months old.

If the conduct says they can breed at 9 months then they have no future and what is the fascination with a wolfy looking dog?

Thats disgusting, poor dogs... well I suppose it USED to happen in the olden days, but I think that is horrible and certainly dont agree with their policies, I do "get" the wolfy looking dog, and also have met and interacted with an awful lot of different breeds of dog none of which suit me as much as my wolfy looking dog, and creating one I do not have a problem with but these policies should have went out with the ark

Yes, you would have thought people had moved on by now, obviously some people are yet to join the 21st century.

What is also a bit strange is that this breed has been going for about 20 years, but I can only find 1 breeder, and that is the founder.

Funny that, perhaps just another delusional breed creator? Still there will doubtless be some one out there to buy a few. I wonder if they use the giant malamute in their breeding?
