i have a love of natural looking working breeds, have wanted a csv for many years...i chose the csv as they are bred for working ability, breed true to type are loyal,a splash of independence and have (at the moment)less health problems then the gsd. csv's have 'wolf blood' but are bred to retain dog/working ability so do not have the characteristic 'wolf traits'(unlike the saarloos,in csv's shyness is a fault!)they are bred to retain the 'wolfy appearance' i dont mind if people say he 'looks like a wolf' because he is meant to...stand Tupac next to a sibe you will see the difference!! i love my n.i dearly but would not have another.... on the 'husky look like wolves note'...............it is ignorance ....my kaos is black and white with piercing blue eyes and about 22kg,how many wolves do you see that look like that?people had seen him and heard him but thought he 'was a wolf' so didn't contact anyone!!!(in london too?)it has prick ear and howls.....oh so it must be a wolf!!!!!  doesnt help with people fuelling the fire does it gnasher?
Oh Lord I hope I've not went all 'crinkly'.........I did turn 40 this year! ;-) If I lived with a breed that was being developed to resemble the wolf then yes of course I would be delighted if people I met said so. But I live with The Siberian Husky, a beautiful athletic sled dog, designed for function. Just once it would be nice to hear 'crackin looking husky you got there' instead of the usual 'hey missus is that a wolf' ;-) The recent public interest in our breed has seen breed rescue organisation struggling to cope at times. The only positive thing that remains is that nowadays the delighted children running towards my guys are now shouting 'snow dogs, snow dogs! It's a start! ;-) I adore the wolf, my favourite wild creature on this earth, but I live with dogs, The Siberian Husky, a sled dog. Now I hope I have not come across as 'crinkly'....that didn't half make me laugh Gnasher. Take good care of yourself. Seoniad.
Iv been reading through this thread and cannot fathom why people are so obsessed with breeds of dogs that look nothing like a wolf? (Of which there are what 11 species of anyway??! -so im assuming your all going off a Timber wolf?? - very cliche!) Here is a "typical" northern wolf type HOW ON EARTH does this look like a mal/husky??? And as for NID/Utes LMAO - they are more along the lines of a Coyote if not a poorly bred Alsation!! (but oooooo what cant say that as thats not so mysterious as dreamcatchers and wolves now is it! haha) A dog is a dog at the end of the day, stop trying to glamorize the poor things and if you cant appreciate it for what it is get over to the bloomin zoo! ETA - not for one second do i believe that Mals/huskies are more closely related to the wolf than a dalmation is - They just didnt move on as far from their phenotype for survival reasons! Oh and the chances that they were mated with wolves are pretty slim as its well known that wolves seduced dogs away from camps and killed them.
Why is it that any owner of a wolf look a like breed is lumped into the new age catagory? I got an NI because they are more trainable then a Sibe and can be let off lead not because of some need to pretend i have a wild animal as a pet. It always seems on this forum that if you have an NI or a Ute people think you must be some sort of new age hippy trying to capture the wild or some such rubbish! Oh and i disagree with the Coyote comment too, they look nothing like them. You might as well say they look a fox or how about a a dingo??
In all fairness Raz, how many people do you know with avatars that are wolves, how many people do you know who's website is full of north american pics and pics of wolves? I'm not slagging off wolf lookalike dogs, i have three myself but i do think all this wolf pics and north american indian stuff people use gives the wrong impression. Kanikula - i do see some similarity to the coyote in that pic, love its tail.
The few Ute/NI owners I have spoken to have said the same. I totally understand where you are coming from Razcox Take care. Seoniad.
Well said to both of you xxxx However, we cannot get away from the fact that sometimes when out and about people do say that the dogs look like wolves, I am not just talking about the NID and the Ute , it prob happens to Sibe and Mal owners too.
It does WW on a regular basis and is something we are very used to. But I do draw the line if it's being said about Isaac.........folks are definately told to 'behave themselves' then Take good care of yourself. Seoniad.
Yes of course you can tell which is the wolf but we are talking about 'resemblence' and each 'individuals' pereception:
Just to add to the 'is that a wolf' debate, the only more annoying question is 'where's his sled?' or 'bet you can't wait for snow then you can get him a sledge' As much as I would love to have Nanuq hitched to a rig and running, it ain't gonna happen in the middle of summer and probably not at all as I do not have the necessary skills. You really need to get over this dog's are really wolves thing Gnasher, all breeds of dogs are dogs, yes they are closely related to wolves due to where they evolved from but they are NOT part wolf they are DOGS. Although Nanuq once thought he was a Sphynx [/IMG]
Personally I don't care if Huskys have recent wolf content or not. They seem to bear a good enough resemblance to wolves for the majority of the disinterested public no doubt aided by the use of them in the movies 'pretending' to be wolves. I have a whole series of 'white fang' movies from the 60s where Huskys play the part of wild wolves. So here is a picture of some European wolves, much like those that would have been running about the UK a couple of hundred years ago. They are in summer coat. Not quite like those fluffy Timber wolves of the movies.
This is very true, it happens to us all the time. I don't really understand why some people get so upset about others thinking they look wolf like, i've met a few husky's who look wolf like too, one in particular blew me away the resemblance was so close, its a certain coat type but cant for the life of me remember what it's called. Anyway one of my dogs has a tight curly tail and gets mistaken by the public for a wolfdog which is crazy, i mean when have you ever seen a wolf with a curly tail? But there you go, thats the public for you. I think Wolfdog owner made a really good point by saying Husky's are used to portray wolves in films so i expect thats where a lot of the public thought comes from.
