I'm sorry I've only caught the tail end of this thread but it seems to me that you've had a lucky escape...I know it may seem heartbreaking at the moment but who is to say that these pups won't be extremely poorly specimens that spend their lives at the vets....or worse. From what you have said I doubt very much that the breeder has even thought about having his breeding stock health tested.

Now that you are a member of Dogsey, (welcome, by the way  ), you will be able to get all the advice you need to help you get the right dog(s) for you...and we will all be right here begging for the photos once you have got them home...and we won't take no for an answer

Best of luck with your search xx

Oh hun, chin up, i'm so relieved for you and you have most definitely made the right choice, there are some lovely people here who are in the know in this breed and will advise you of some good breeders and you will see that it will be worth it in the end when you get a well bred and happy and healthy pup, this man was only out to scam anyone he could and make as much money as possible from his poor dogs. Very sad. :(

I feel sad about what will happen to these puppies tho, he's clearly just after the money so he could sell them to anyone! Like i said, he didnt even ask me about my home life, whether i work or am away all day, etc! I dont know anything really about breeding but im pretty sure that decent breeders would ask those basic questions because they want to know their pups are going to good homes?

I will be asking many more questions next time, make sure that i can genuinely trust the breeder, and i will def only get one, we didnt set out to get 2 anyway, the breeder offered us a deal on them!!

Not that i wouldnt love to have 2 puppies together but if that was what we decided then we'd def get them from different litters!

Thankyou so much to everyone for their honesty even if it wasnt what i wanted to hear! If only this guy had a bit more integrity then maybe i wouldnt be feeling so gutted now!

    Thanks again

Two puppies can be sweet but my advice would be to get a boy and a girl and from two different litters, preferably with a couple of months between them. Once you have gone through all the puppy basics witht he first puppy and have house broken them and socialised them, it's so much easier to bring along a second opup and have the first one help you! You'll need to make sure they are spayed/neutered down the line, but then I would recommend that you do that anyway:) ...

Don't beat yourself up about thiese pups, they were just not meant to be, but now that you have made your self a puppy shaped hole in your heart and your life, you can be sure a pup will be along shortly to fill it up:)

Start all the fun stuff of research. There are so many breeds out there to choose from. Get along to the local rescue centre. Even if you don't go along the road of rescue it's a really good place to get a feel for the different breeds and types of dog out there, what size they will grow to, potential problems etc...

Dogsey is a great place for research and there are rescues that pop along from time to time and tempt us all witht heir darlings:) ... I wish I had found this forum before I got my doggies.. I have learned so much since joining here.

Best of luck and keep us informed all along the way :)

Oh im so pleased you havnt paid your money, what an idiot this man is, try not to worry about the pups im sure they will all get good homes.

Are you set on a staffy or was it just that that was the breed on offer? I heard of a staffy last year being left in a cupboard for up to 14 hrs a day then he got the crap kicked out of him every night for having gone to the toilet, he never ever got walked and got beaten more than he got fed.

I phoned every kennels and straffy rescue in the north west and not one would take him, rescues are totally overrun with unwanted staffys. In desperation i stopped a couple in the woods walking two staffys, told them what was going on turns out they were in showing circles with lots of contacts and even they couldnt get him into a rescue, they did come through with a home for him though which took a weight off my mind as i knew he wouldnt be beaten anymore, it wasnt even my dog but i did all the phoning and running around takingt he new owners to meet him etc.

rescuing is in my blood and i personally would never buy from a breeder, i get to much satisfaction from helping animals.

would you consider rescue? they would at least know the temprement of the dog and they would probably provide back up if you need it, there are rescues for just about every breed out there as well as mongrals.

good luck looking for your new family member :)

I am so relieved that you have changed your mind about buying these two puppies... The Sire's temperament really had me worried...

Rescuing is a great suggestion... The dogs are generally grown up, and their true temperament can be tested..

I'm one of those people who likes cross bred dogs, but I would never knowingly get a puppy, if I knew about any temperament issues...

Well done to you, thank god you helped that poor dog. I also go down the rescue route, have done with 2 dogs and 4 cats, and wish I could take more.

Just as an aside as I think this is now sorted, but how many ‘good’ breeders have both sire and dam?

As you I would never go to a breeder but I would not necessarily expect to see the sire in the same home – I would of course want to know all about him, including proof of relevant health checks, and be able to see him if possible but is it necessarily the sign of a good breeder to have both parents?

I saw the state the por thing was in and i knew the monster he lived with i had to do something, its my nature i have 93 rescued animals here (before you all fall off your seats i mainly do ferret rescue lol)

when you see as many badly treated animals as i do i realy dont see any satisfaction in oing to a breeder (for any animal, ferret or dog) the aprecciation a rescue dog gives when they know they are now safe is 1000 times better than any feeling of going picking a pup from a litter and handing cash over to fund more litters.

Ok ill get off my soap box lol, it wasnt a rant at the threads author im just passionate about giving animals a second chance in life. every one is entitled to their own decision if they want to go to a breeder or not :)

I'd love to go the rescue route but unfortunately i dont qualify, and thats not cos I'd mistreat the animal or anything like that, its just that most kennels and rescue centres require you to not be away from the dog for more than 4 hours a day, which is understandable. The problem is that including travel time I'm actually away 5 hours a day 3 days a week :(

anyway, just to really confuse me, and all of you, the guy text me back after i had a bit of a go at him, saying that actually he would still stick to the original agreement if i still wanted them! I'm wary now tho, and def wouldnt get 2.

also, this seems to be the day for me to be rescuer, just this afternoon I've been offered a BEAUTIFUL white 1yr old staffy, microchipped, first vaccination but due 2nd, good with kids etc for £100 coz he needs re-homing, AND, from seperate person obviously :), my neighbours dog who is a gorgeous 8mnth old cross of something, he has no idea what! He cant handle her and apparently she's already been in a few homes and he wants to see her settled somewhere.

I've looked at pics of breeds and she looks a lot like an anatolian shepherd dog, which I'd never heard of before.

Emotionally traumatic day for me, lol!

By the way I have to say well done to braccas collies, i can't stand people that do such evil things to beautiful animals. Its disgusting!
You are truly a wonderful person for going to all that effort for a defenceless animal :)

If the dog will be left for 5 hours a day you would be much better off with an older dog, you need to be with a puppy all day, you shouldn't really leave a pup for much more than an hour, they can need to pee every half hour, sometimes less, 5 hours is far too long for a baby puppy to be left, sorry if you don't like that, JMO. :(

Not at all. I have never met my Labs sire, but I have heard personally from others about his great temperament. I am also aware of his achievements (he has show and field trial awards) which to me speaks volumes about his quality. I was given contact information if I wanted to speak to the owner of the sire but never felt any need to.

Most breeders use stud dogs from other kennels to keep their gene pool wide. So, not meeting the sire if you are getting the pup from a reputable breeder isn't too big a deal. Of course should you desire they should give contact details for the stud owner.

Hi ibelieve :) I understand you have resolved the situation but would like to make a couple of points here for future reference ..

I would be very worried if the breeder told me they had both the sire and the dam but I couldn't go near the sire verbal agreement or not.
If a good breeder had the sire on the premises they would be only too delighted to let you see and meet him.
As Spot rightly says many good breeders would not own the stud dog anyway, but they should be able to get a copy of his pedigree and documents if you ask .

Regarding health tests, many good breeders register their puppies with the Kennel Club and if you ask to look at the registration documents of the parents (and the puppies if they have been registered already) there should be a note of the health tests carried out on the sire and dam under the KC/BVA testing scheme and the dates of the tests .
In the case of my present dog I can tell by the registration documents that both parents were tested for CHC GPRA and HC (eye conditions). I also have a veterinary certificate to say my puppy was eye screened at 6 weeks.

If you want advice on buying a puppy from a good breeder you would be well advised to contact one of the Staffie Breed Clubs, you will find the details online and they will advise you about required health tests and may have a list of approved breeders.
Otherwise as already said there are many lovely Staffies in rescues looking for a home...:)

Hi tell this man to b**ger off - thats the best way he should be dealt with.

As to rescues you would qualify for breed rescue, If you contact Stafford Breed rescue they will look at everything on a case by case basis and up here we allow this period of time as acceptable.

Regarding this time period - that wont be ideal for trying to housetrain a puppy and would definetly make it harder to train etc. If you are willing to rescue try breed rescue they will assess homecheck and then match you to the right dog.

    good luck

sounds like this guy tried his luck fleecing you for more money as he probably knew how much you had set your heart on them, well its back fired and now he is panicking he has lost the sale (which he has) tough on him, shoudlnt of been greedy.

What a dilema you have now though lol, which dog if any have you decided to go for? what a shame a pup of 8 months old has already had several homes :-( such a shame.

    Staffies are nice, not nasty.

Two littermates is big mistake - NO professional dog handler would willingly go down this route.

Run, do not walk, from this breeder.

5 hours is too long for a pup

Most rescues will consider working homes if you have a dog walker to pop in midday.

in my area staffies are a problem not because of the breed [although most of them dont look like real staffies ] but because of the numpties who breed them which sounds like the people you were going to, any breeder who cares about their dogs or the pups they breed will ask you loads of questions and will happy show of the heath cheak ,awards, and the dogs themself as they will be proud of them, and a dog that has such problems that they cannot lrt you see it should never ever be used at stud, you have had a very luck escape, which can now be used to your advantage take your time in choosing a pup and dont be affended at being asked a lot of questions make your head rule your heart and if you want two get one and make it a dog you can be proud of and know it inside out then get anouther one and it can help you raise the baby its better that way ,as its more pleasure for you as its a lot easier and calmer and you get the joy of having a pup twice and they dont get old at the same time i wish you all the best in your choice and hope you find your perfect dog

yeah, if we do decide to get a puppy it will def only be one. ive spoken to the breeder again and mentioned the fact that 2 littermates would fight and he said "oh yeah, that does happen"

i think maybe this is the first time he's done it and is a little inexperienced. i feel i was a bit harsh on him because i was so angry, and obv upset cos i had my heart set on the puppies. We'll see.

Anyway, with the dogs that need re-homing, the white staffy has gone to a friend of theirs which is good, altho he was absolutely stunning and I'd have loved to have him. At least he's got a nice home now tho.
And the other one we're still thinking about. She's a lovely looking dog and she's very friendly but could definitely be hard work, i dont know if she is an anatolian shepherd dog or maybe a cross but she does look a lot like one and i've read loads of info about them. Apparently they grow to be HUGE and are quite difficult to train. I'd love to give her a new home and finally have her settled, bless her, but im just not sure it would be best for her if im not going to be able to handle her properly.
I'd really appreciate some advice on this one, but dont have a lot of time as apparently he wants me to take her tonight!
    Thanks
